    • An apparatus and method for cooling product in a continuous hot-rolling mill. The apparatus comprises a cooling unit including a frame defining a plurality of spaced, cartridge receiving slots in which a plurality of guide and spray cartridges are removably mounted. The guide and spray cartridges are similarly configured so that either cartridge can be mounted in a given frame slot so that the number and ratio of spray to guide cartridges can be varied to modify the cooling characteristics of the cooling unit. Headers, formed integrally with the cooling frame communicate with a source of coolant under pressure and include a plurality of outlets connectable to the spray cartridges by individual conduits. Valves are provided to adjust the coolant flow rate to a cartridge and a quick release coupling is utilized to enable the cartridges to be easily removed for service and/or replacement. One embodiment of a spray cartridge includes a housing that defines a central through passage in which radially directed nozzles are mounted, which are operative to spray coolant received from a coolant chamber defined by the cartridge housing, onto the product as it passes through the opening. In another embodiment, a spray tube defining a through passage is mounted in the cartridge housing and includes two sets of ports that communicate with the cartridge coolant chamber. One set of ports is angled with respect to the spray tube centerline whereas the other set of ports are directed radially. In the preferred cooling method, cooling units are placed before and after the last finishing roll stand so that pre- and post-roll cooling is provided.

    • A heat shield arrangement for strip material employs insulating panels of thin-walled composite construction. The panels include an upper series displaceable upwardly by power actuation means to avoid damage by buckled or lifting material. Protective members projecting below the upper panels are associated with sensing means to actuate the raising of the upper panels and can have a limited displacement before the raising of the upper panels is actuated. The power actuation means can themselves act on the sensing means to determine the minimum force from the material that causes raising of said panels. Control means displace the panels in response to the sensed transverse temperature profile to maintain the profile more uniform and some of the panels may have heating means for this purpose.

    • There is described a rotary trough type cooling bed run-in apparatus for dropping the roll bars of a steel round bar mill onto a cooling bed in an aligned state at high speed and absent the warpage associated with similar devices. Several troughs each having a longitudinal opening and an axial opening are rotatably mounted. A roll bar is introduced axially into each of said troughs following which said opening is closed off by a cover to ensure that said bar will not be prematurely ejected. As said troughs move downwardly said covers are simultaneously removed to expose the enclosed bars and these are allowed to fall downwardly onto a cooling bed.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for cooling wire rod and wire in which wire rod and wire leaving the last roll block of a finishing mill is delivered to a first portion of a cooling path for the cooling of wire or wire which slopes downwardly from a likewise inclined finishing block at an angle .alpha. of at least 3.degree. so that the wire rod or wire is subject to little or no compressive stress due to the friction between the wire rod or wire and the tube through which the latter passes in order to be subjected to cooling liquid. The wire rod or wire can be placed under tension if the angle of slope .alpha. is sufficiently large and, in an extreme case the first portion of the cooling path can decent vertically. A loop layer receives the wire rod or wire from the first portion and deposits the wire rod or wire in overlapping loops on conveying means where the wire rod or wire is air-cooled. The avoidance or minimizing of compressive stresses in the first cooling section makes the wire rod or wire less prone to buckle.

    • In a rolling mill for reducing metal, having upper and lower work rolls between which the metal is passed and at least one back-up roll for the upper work roll, the combination of means for applying coolant to the surface of the upper work roll only on the outgoing side of the mill, casing structure enclosing the locality of coolant application and so arranged that a narrow gap is defined between the upper work roll and a transverse wall of the casing below the coolant-applying means, and means for creating a rapid flow of air along the upper work roll surface adjacent the gap in a direction to prevent exit of coolant through the gap from the casing structure while withdrawing air from the casing structure. The air-flow creating means may include means for maintaining the interior of the casing structure at subatmospheric pressure. A method of cooling the upper work roll in such a mill comprises applying coolant to the surface thereof only at a locality on the outgoing side of the mill while maintaining an enclosure in surrounding relation to the coolant-applying locality with a narrow gap defined between the enclosure and the upper work roll surface at a level below that locality, and directing a rapid flow of air along the latter roll surface adjacent the gap to prevent exit of coolant through the gap. The back-up roll, which is in contact with the upper work roll, cooperates with the foregoing structures and steps to prevent carryover of excessive coolant onto the upper work roll surface on the ingoing side of the mill.
