    • A patient supporting and transporting backboard assembly formed from two cooperating, substantially rigid, lightweight panels which are corrosive, splinter, rot and stain resistant, can be sterilized for use in hospital environments, and allow patient x-rays without transferring the patient to another support. The panels are preferably formed from resinous plastic material such as polycarbonate and include integral, stabilizing ribs or channels and a peripheral edge structure providing a carrying handhold. Tie-down straps having resilient clips received on the edge structure can be positioned as desired along the length of the backboard. Supplemental carrying handles and head restraint assemblies for immobilizing a patient's head and/or applying cervical traction are also provided for attachment to the backboard.

    • A bed and a stretcher for permitting transferring of a patient from a stretcher over to a bed, or visa versa. The bed has a plurality of supporting ledges arranged in parallel with a uniform spacing and set in place on the main bed frame in a horizontal manner. A vertically traveling frame that has a plurality of uniformily spaced supporting ledges arranged in parallel in a horizontal manner is so set in place as to be movable in a vertical direction relative to the main bed frame, whereby the supporting ledges of the traveling frame are caused to be inserted into or pass through the spaces between the supporting ledges of the bed frame. The stretcher has a pair of spaced supporting bars and a supporting member for supporting a patient. One of the supporting bars is fixed on one end of the supporting member, and the other supporting bar is arranged to be connected with, and separated from, the other end of the supporting member. The stretcher and bed are combined with each other in such a manner that the supporting member of the stretcher is inserted into the spaces formed between respective adjoining supporting ledges of the vertically traveling frame.

    • An apparatus for the treatment of a victim suffering from shock includes a single piece, double-walled panel of flexible material forming a chamber adapted to receive and contain a pressurized gas. The panel has a pair of lower sections adapted to surround the legs of the victim, and an upper section adapted to surround the abdomen of the victim in the region below the victim's rib cage. When the panel is inflated by the introduction of pressurized gas into the chamber, a pressure is exerted on the legs and abdomen of the victim, thereby decreasing the volume of venous blood pooled therein and producing an increased venous return to the victim's heart. This external pressure also provides immobilization for the victim and affords to him protection and comfort while being transported from an accident site to a medical facility.

    • The framework of a splint stretcher having upper and lower side members is hinged along its length to provide a body portion together with a leg and foot portion that may be pivoted upward at an angle to be raised relative to the body portion. Means is provided to secure the leg and foot portion in the elevated angular position relative to the body portion. Pivotal support means for the foot end of the stretcher may also be provided to extend downwardly at an adjustable angle from the foot end of the stretcher to engage a supporting plane surface and thereby support the foot end of the stretcher at a desired position above the plane of a stretcher supporting surface.

    • A substantially rectangular sheet of flexible material has longitudinally aligned loops formed along opposite edges for receiving a pair of rigid, elongated handles. The adjacent loops are spaced far enough apart to permit a hand to be inserted between the adjacent loops for the purpose of grasping the exposed portion of the handles to support a person seated on the sheet of flexible material as it hangs downwardly from the handles to function as a sling. A belt is fastened to the upper surface of the sheet by suitably positioned loops and passes around the seated person''s waist to prevent the person from sliding off the sling. The edges of the sling are preferably reinforced with folded fabric tape strips to strengthen the edges and prevent fraying. An opening may be provided in the center of the sling to permit the occupant of the sling to be placed on a toilet seat without the need for subsequently removing and then replacing the sling.
