    • Distributed computing task costing is disclosed. Costing can be employed to determine if a task will be passed to a distributed computing cluster including mobile devices. Costing can include determining a base cost value predicated on a selectable level of utility to a user of a burdened device, a base time value related to completing the task without the use of the cluster, determining a delay cost, and any monetary costs associated with performing the task without the use of the cluster. Costing can further include demining a relief cost that can include the selectable level of utility, a relief time value related to completing the task with the cluster, the delay cost, an incentive cost based on the sum across a set of relief devices and their corresponding parameters for cluster participation, and any remaining monetary costs borne by the burdened device. Where the base cost value and relief cost value satisfies conditions, a task can be divided into subtasks that can be distributed to the cluster to accomplish the task in a distributed computing environment.

    • An apparatus designs a communication route for each of requested channels by selecting, with higher priority, first transmission-paths providing connections between particular nodes in a network in which a wavelength-multiplexed optical signal is transmitted than second transmission-paths providing connections between three or more nodes in the network, and assigns, for each channel, a wavelength included in the wavelength-multiplexed optical signal. Between the particular nodes, when the number of wavelengths assigned to channels passing through the first transmission-paths is greater than the number of wavelengths assigned to channels passing through the second transmission-paths, the apparatus modifies the designed communication routes and the assigned wavelengths so that, via any of the particular nodes, one of two channels having the same wavelength is routed from the first transmission-paths to the second transmission-paths and the other one of the two channels is routed from the second transmission-paths to the first transmission-paths.

    • In one embodiment, a method includes accessing a data store comprising a log of requests transmitted by a plurality of remote hosts, each request corresponding to one or more resources maintained by a web site; analyzing the requests and one or more attributes of the resources corresponding to the respective requests using a cost function relating to network performance, wherein a first component of the cost function is directed to a performance improvement achieved by grouping one or more of the resources for transmission to one or more remote hosts and a second component is directed to a performance inefficiency caused by grouping the one or more resources for transmission to the one or more remote hosts; and identifying one or more groupings of one or more resources that optimize the cost function for network performance.

    • A network system for an expandable distributed core architecture (“DCA”) includes multiple spine switches, multiple leaf switches coupled thereto, and a plurality of interconnections coupling each of the spine switches to each of the leaf switches. Servers, storage, and other system items and resources can be coupled to the leafs via downlinks and uplinks. Each of the plurality of spine switches includes at least one unused spine port that is reserved for a future expansion of the DCA in order to accommodate the addition of at least one other separate leaf switch to the at least one unused spine port. Additional ports can be unused and reserved for future expansion additions of more leafs and/or more spines. Also, a computing system assists in the design of the specific number and configuration of spines, leafs and interconnections based upon user inputs regarding current and future system needs.
