    • The invention relates to an interference cancellation method and a receiver including interference canceller for suppressing a narrow-band interference signal from a received signal, converter for performing an orthonormal conversion of the signal into subspace components of a desired subspace, a decoder connected operationally to the output of the interference canceller, in which decoder an estimate for the received signal is obtained. The output of the decoder is operationally connected to the interference canceller, and the converter is arranged to determine an estimate for narrow-band interference properties, in which determination the estimate obtained from the output of the decoder is subtracted from the received signal before the orthonormal conversion is performed. By using the determined estimate, the interference canceller is arranged to reduce effect of the subspace components including narrow-band interference signals from the received signal.

    • A system is provided for use with a multi-user detector MUD, which dramatically decreases the processing time for separating out interfering transmissions from a number of users by eliminating from each processing iteration consideration of those bit estimates for which the probability or estimate of their value exceeds a predetermined threshold and can therefore be declared “certain”. In a Turbo MUD environment in which the output of the MUD is coupled back to the MUD through an error correction system, the output of the error correction is thresholded such that those bit estimates having probabilities or estimates greater than a predetermined threshold are assigned a quantized value and are eliminated from further processing by the MUD. For certain low-complexity processing Turbo MUDs there can be as much of a reduction as one-third in processing time, whereas for full MUD processing, the reduction in processing time can be as much as 1/30th.

    • A multi-user detection method eliminating interference between users transmitting modulated data of symbols on a transmission channel, each transmission channel including at least one propagation path arriving at an array of reception antennas in a direction of arrival. Each user (a) estimates the signal transmitted by the user from the antenna signals, effecting estimation of the direction of arrival and characteristics of propagation of each path of the transmission channel from the signals; (b) estimates the data transmitted by the user from the estimation of the signal transmitted; (c) estimates the contribution of the user to the signals received by the different antennas from the estimated data and the estimated direction of arrival and propagation characteristics; and (d) subtracts from the antenna signals the contribution estimated at (c) to obtain cleaned antenna signals, supplied by at least a first sequence, used as antenna signals by at least a second sequence.

    • A signal is received in the presence of noise and interference by demodulating the signal when a relationship between the signal and the noise and the interference meets a criterion, and by jointly demodulating the signal when the relationship between the signal and the noise and the interference does not meet the criterion. Moreover, the signal may be demodulated if a relationship between the noise and the interference meets a second criterion and may be jointly demodulated if the relationship between the noise and the interference does not meet the second criterion. More specifically, demodulation may be performed when the signal-to-noise-and-interference ratio exceeds a first threshold and joint demodulation may be performed when the signal-to-noise-and-interference ratio is less than the first threshold. Moreover, the signal may be jointly demodulated if the interference-to-noise ratio exceeds a second threshold, and the signal may be demodulated if the interference-to-noise ratio is less than the second threshold. Thus, if the desired signal power is high relative to noise and interference, joint demodulation may be skipped and demodulation may be performed. Moreover, if the desired signal power is not large compared to interference-and-noise, joint demodulation may be used only when the interference power is high relative to the noise power. Finally, an interfering signal's synchronization word may be found in the received signal, and the power of the interfering signal relative to the noise power may be determined from the located interfering signal synchronization word, to thereby determine the interference-to-noise ratio. Moreover, the interfering signal's synchronization word that is detected can provide improved estimation of the interfering signal's channel estimate, which can be estimated in terms of the interfering signal's medium response compared to the composite channel response.

    • A radio communication method and system for transmitting multiple-user digital data information in a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) format over multipath and mutual-interfering channels to a receiving terminal with diversity antennas and equalization signal processing. At the receiving terminal, diversity antenna signals are grouped into time blocks and replicas are generated of the user-unique CDMA sequence signals for a set of K mutually interfering users. Within each time block the multiuser channel is estimated, equalization parameters are calculated, and decision-feedback equalization is used to produce multiuser estimates associated with a subset λ of the K users. These estimates are deinterleaved and error-correction decoded to recover transmitted digital data information for the subset of λ users. The invention includes embodiments for a CDMA sequence period that is equal to or longer than the transmitted data symbol interval with applications to current CDMA reverse link and forward link standards. Also embodiments for both decision-directed and reference-directed channel estimation are given.
