    • In a frequency-domain excision system for a wide band receiver, a window function is applied to blocks of received signal samples and a transform function is applied to the windowed blocks. Each block of frequency-domain coefficients from the transform function is morphologically filtered to generate a threshold function representing an estimate of the spectrum of the desired wide band signal, and a non-linear gain function is applied to the coefficients. The gain function has a fixed-gain region for input values less than a threshold value from the threshold function, an excision region for input values greater than a multiple of the threshold value, and a soft limiting region between the fixed-gain region and the excision region. The inverse transform is performed on the excised blocks of coefficients, and an overlap-eliminating central portion of the inverse of the window function is applied to the resulting blocks of signal samples.

    • A narrow band interference excision circuit for use in broadband digital data communication systems such as CDMA systems. The excision circuit is comprised of a matrix of polyphase filters that divide the input signal into a plurality of narrow subbands. Each narrow subband signal is examined to determine if narrowband interference exists in that bin. This is done preferably by computing the average power of the subband signal. If a signal in a bin has an average power greater than some adjustable or adaptive threshold, then the entire subband signal is eliminated. A bank of polyphase synthesis filters reassembles the composite signal. An equalization circuit with an error predictor comprised of an adaptive FIR filter is coupled to adapt coefficients of the filter and generate a colored noise cancellation signal to remove colored noise from the input to the slicer.

    • A spread-spectrum CDMA communications system for locating remote units, and for communicating message data between a plurality of remote units and a base station. The spread-spectrum CDMA communications system includes a plurality of base stations and a plurality of remote units. A base station has a spread-spectrum modulator for spread-spectrum processing the message data, and a transmitter for transmitting the spread-spectrum processed-message data, combined with a generic-chip-code signal, from the base station to a remote unit. The base station also has an antenna, and spread-spectrum detectors for recovering message-data communicated from the remote units. A remote unit has an antenna, and a detector coupled to the antenna for recovering data communicated from the base station. The detector includes a spread spectrum demodulator. Also, the remote unit has a device for converting the format of the data into a form suitable for communicating over radio waves, a spread spectrum modulator and a transmitter. The base station has a range circuit, which comparers the generic-chip-code signal generated at the base station with the generic-chip-code signal received from the remote unit, for determining a range between the remote unit and the base station.

    • In a time diversity radio communications system, quadrature-modulated spread spectrum signals of different mutual time delay are combined into a code division multiplex signal and up-converted to a radio-frequency signal and transmitted. At a receive site, the signal is received by an antenna and down-converted to recover the code division multiplex signal. Quadrature-modulated component signals contained in the recovered code division multiplex signal are converted to baseband signals which are then time-aligned with each other. The time-aligned baseband signals are multiplied respectively by complex weighting factors and are combined together to produce an input signal for an adaptive equalizer. This input signal is also applied to an AGC amplifier where it is amplified and applied to correlation detectors where correlations between the amplified signal and the baseband signals are detected and the complex weighting factors are derived respectively from the correlations. In a modified embodiment, the quadrature-modulated component signals are fed into an adaptive RAKE matched filter where the output of the AGC amplifier is used for detecting the correlations.
