    • A device and method for block code error correction. The device includes a block code input unit, an erasing address table, an error table and a decoder. The block code input unit is used to input a block code. The erasing address table and the error table have a plurality of erasing entities and error entities in rows and columns, respectively. The decoder decodes the block code in a row direction based on the erasing address table to find data errors on rows and update the error table, and updates the erasing address table in the row direction according to a first determination principle. Next, the decoder decodes the block code in a column direction based on the erasing address table to find data errors on columns and update the error table, and updates the erasing address table in the column direction according to a second determination principle.

    • Disclosed are, inter alia, methods, apparatus, data structures, computer-readable media, and mechanisms, for use in protecting groups of data words. One embodiment manipulates these data words to generate a resultant data word and an error correction code thereon for use in identifying a position of a bit error, with error detection codes used to identify which data word actually has the bit error. One embodiment retrieves a stored particular data word and its error detection code from memory or other storage. If an error is detected, the other data words in the group corresponding to the error correction code are acquired and are manipulated to produce a new resultant data word. The error correction code and the new resultant data word are used to identify the position of the bit error, with a corresponding bit position corrected in the particular data word.

    • An iterative method of correcting errors in a data block. Bad bytes are first identified using information derived from an 8 B/10 B decoding of the data block. Within each identified bad byte, suspect bits are subsequently identified using information derived from parity decoding of a row of the data block. Each suspect bit is then classified as either a confirmed error bit or an unconfirmed error bit using information derived from parity decoding of a column of the data block in which the suspect bit is located. Confirmed error bits are then corrected, the parity bits corresponding to the confirmed error bit reset, and the bad byte cleared. The process is then repeated if one or more bad bytes remain in the data block.
