    • An intravascular blood pump designed to be advanced through the blood vessel system of the patient, comprises a housing (15) accommodating an electric motor (12), the proximal end of the housing (15) being connected to a catheter (23) and the distal end thereof carrying a pump (11). The electric motor (12) includes a stator winding (17) forming a load-bearing component of the housing (15). The stator winding (17) is embedded in a matrix made of synthetic resin. The housing (15) is of an ironless design without any magnetic reflux device. The motor is operated with a rotational speed of about 50,000 upm. The magnetic stray field generated with such high frequencies does not disturb the cardiac rhythm of the patient. The motor can be given a compact size and thus has a high mechanical output power.

    • A ship propulsion system includes at least one marine propeller, at least one electric motor which drives the at least one marine propeller, and an inverter-fed power supply system which supplies the at least one electric motor with electric power. The power supply system includes at least one drive machine and at least one generator driven thereby. The at least one electric motor and the at least one generator are configured as three-phase synchronous machines. In order to reduce losses per kW installed power and thus to allow for a stronger energizing field in the stator winding, the at least one electric motor configured as a three-phase synchronous machine and/or the at least one generator configured as a three-phase synchronous machine of the power supply system is/are provided with an air-gap three-phase winding devoid of iron grooves as the power supply system. The bundle conductors of the winding are made from insulated thin cooper wires that are disposed in an annular gap between a rotor and a laminated iron yoke, and the air gap three phase winding is reinforced by a plastic structure and/or embedded in or impregnated with resin and to which a pertaining cooling device is connected by which the heat produced in the cooling device is dissipated.

    • Disclosed is a Segmented Coil Array (“SCA”) for use in rotary electromotive devices, such as motors and generators, which employ multiple coils operating within an axial gap magnetic structure. Individual conductor coils have offset circumferentially extending portions so as to allow interlocking of adjacent coils radially extending portions to form a circular array in which all of the coils' working conductors, which are those in the axial magnetic field, can be oriented in the same plane. This construction allows minimum magnet gap spacing, thus, maximizing the available magnetic flux. The resulting SCA may easily be commuted as a three-phase motor, actuator, or generator. The invention also provides a structure whereby multiple coil arrays and associated magnetic rotors may be alternately stacked in layers so as to further increase the total coil working area within a motor or generator of a given diameter.

    • A system and method for reducing the cost of producing a brushless DC motor is presented. The brushless DC motor provides higher power density and efficiency with an increased tool run time. The brushless DC motor includes a rotor assembly that has an unmagnetized permanent magnet affixed to a shaft. The permanent magnet remains unmagnetized until the motor is partially assembled. A plurality of coils for producing a magnetic field are wound about the rotor assembly. The coils include end turns that enclose the rotor assembly such that the rotor assembly is not removable. Since the windings are wound with the rotor assembly already enclosed, the windings do not require large end coils to allow subsequent insertion of the rotor. Minimizing the end coils reduces the length of wire required per turn, thereby reducing the resistance of the winding. Also, since the permanent magnet is unmagnetized when the coils are wound around the rotor assembly the winding process is simplified by not coupling energy into the wire which would influence the winder operation. The wound assembly is inserted into a stator stack comprised of magnetic material that provides a magnetic flux return path for the magnetic flux generated by the permanent magnet. Using an unmagnetized permanent magnet facilitates easy insertion of the wound assembly into the stator stack, reduces the accumulation of magnetic debris during the manufacturing process, and permits the motor assembly to be sealed prior to magnetizing the permanent magnet.

    • An improved airgap armature for use in brushless rotary electrical machines is constructed with multiple phase windings comprised of wires that are wound onto and bonded to a supporting form constructed from nonmagnetic and electrically nonconductive material. The form has two ends, each with features for holding end turns of the multiple phase windings. The multiple phase windings have active lengths and end turns, with the active lengths being located on one side of the form and the end turns located on the opposite side of the form. The active lengths, which are located in the armature airgap of the electrical machine, lie flat against the form for minimal thickness, and the airgap armature can achieve maximum winding density. The form provides an easy method for winding as well as increased structural integrity in the final armature to enable it to transfer torque between the rotor and stationary housing.
