摘要： A seal and corresponding method of manufacture of stacks enabled by the physical properties of the seal are provided. In the instance of a fuel cell or other electrochemical stack, the seal provides low-cost manufacturing and reliable/durable operation in high temperature (e.g., 120° C. to 250° C.) and acidic environments. The seal provides an elastomeric material characteristic providing resiliency and flexibility, and a protective characteristic that protects the seal from the high temperature acidic environment, such as found in high temperature PEM fuel cells. The seal is affixed to a plate of a fuel cell stack assembly prior to assembly of the stack, such that there is no requirement to apply an adhesive seal, gasket, free flow to solid sealing material, or the like, to each plate during assembly of the fuel cell stack, or during a disassembly and re-assembly process.

The seal member is advantageously formed of one or more substantially continuous fibers. Further, preferred materials for the seal member are provided which advantageously allow for a desired level of impermeability while preventing contamination of the fuel cell stack.

摘要： A fuel cell is disclosed that includes a cathode, an anode and an electrode assembly, each including lateral surfaces that adjoin one another. The electrode assembly is arranged between the cathode and anode. Each of the cathode, the anode and the electrode assembly include perimeter surfaces transverse to the lateral surfaces that are arranged adjacent to one another. A UV curable sealant is arranged on the perimeter surfaces providing a seal over the lateral surfaces. After the UV curable sealant has been applied to the perimeter surfaces, the sealant is exposed to a UV light source for a desired duration to cure the sealant. Accordingly, the UV curable sealant reduces the complexity of the cell stack assembly and decreases its production time.
