    • Pipe connector assembly for replacing a core spray line in a nuclear reactor without field cutting, measuring, or welding such line. In one embodiment, the pipe connector assembly includes a first coupling member, a second coupling member, and at least one locking element. The first coupling member includes a flange, a pipe engaging portion, a spherical convex seat portion, a bore and a stud bore. The second coupling member includes a flange having a spherical concave seat portion for receiving the convex seat portion of the first coupling member, a pipe engaging portion, a bore, and a stud bore. The locking element includes at least one spherical washer and a crimp mechanism and couples the first coupling member and the second coupling member by extending through the flange stud bores. The spherical seat portions allow the coupling members to be rotationally misaligned while remaining to be substantially coaxially aligned thus accommodating additional core spray line length while maintaining a leak tight connection.

    • Methods and apparatus for enabling repeatable positioning of inspection and other service tools on an inner diameter of a shroud wall between a top guide and core plate in a boiling water nuclear reactor are described. In one embodiment, the delivery system includes a positioning unit configured to attach to a shroud head flange, a strong back assembly, and a rail assembly connected to the strong back assembly. The positioning unit includes a horizontal member having a plurality of slots and circular shaped openings to mate with seismic pins on the shroud head flange, a radial member and a z-axis adjustment assembly. The radial member extends from the horizontal member to the z-axis adjustment assembly. The z-axis adjustment assembly includes a mast coupling and an elongate screw threadedly attached to the coupling so that as the screw rotates, the coupling moves relative to the radial member. The strong back assembly includes a mast and an extension unit. The mast attaches to the coupling of the positioning unit, and the extension unit is connected to one end of the mast. The mast transfers the load between the extension unit and the positioning unit, thereby causing the shroud to support the weight of the tools. The rail assembly is connected to the extension unit, and the rail assembly includes a rail and a mounting plate movably secured to the rail. The rail assembly further includes a motor coupled to the mounting plate for moving the mounting plate relative to, and along, rail. The rail assembly also includes a plurality of suction cups for removable attachment to an inner wall of the shroud.

    • In order to facilitate refueling operations, cables, which provide control and power linkages between control element drive mechanisms (CEDMS), and a terminal panel supported on a side wall of the reactor cavity, are disposed in a cylindrical extension of a cylindrical enclosure which encloses the CEDMS, with sufficient slack that they can be drawn out of the cylindrical extension through windows and supported on a drawbridge type of arrangement comprised of pivotal window tray type structures which are respectively hingedly connected to the cylindrical extension and either the wall or the terminal panel, and which span the gap between the cylindrical extension and the terminal panel when pivoted to their respective supporting positions.

    • A process for making a cladding for a nuclear fuel rod is disclosed which includes the following steps. First, at least two layers of zirconium-based metals are spray deposited on a generally cylindrical substrate in a manner that provides a rough, cylindrically-shaped, porous billet. The zirconium-based metal for each layer is different from an adjacent layer and is selected to provide a desired combination of properties. Next, the substrate is removed from the spray deposited material, thereby providing an elongated tube hollow. The spray deposited material is then consolidated in a known manner to remove the porosity, densify the tube hollow to substantially full density, and reduce the cross-sectional dimension of the tube hollow to a desired size. In a further step the consolidated tube hollow is annealed under conditions of time and temperature selected to relieve stresses imposed on the tube hollow during the consolidation step and to provide a desired combination of properties in the densified zirconium-based metal layers.

    • A welding electrode for providing a significant improvement in the detrimental tensile residual stress condition on the root side of welds, especially on the inside wall of piping welds. The electrode has a tungsten alloy blade. The blade is made from sheets of tungsten alloy by cutting or stamping. The preferred shape of the blade is an isosceles triangle. The base of the flat triangular blade is secured in a slot formed in an electrode holder. The electrode holder is preferably T-shaped, with the shank of the holder being connected to a conventional welding torch. The holder is made of electrically conductive material, whereby the blade is coupled to the torch for producing an electric arc at the blade tip for welding. The blade is optionally covered with a ceramic coating to prevent arcing to the side walls of the groove formed between the parts being welded. A further option is to incorporate insulating stand-offs which protrude from both flat sides of the electrode blade. These stand-offs serve to maintain a minimum gap between the side walls of the welding groove and the flat sides of the electrode blade, thus preventing the ceramic coating from being scratched off during electrode travel relative to the groove.
