    • In a method of high spatial resolution imaging or modifying a structure, the structure is marked with a substance which is selected from the group of substances which can be transferred from a first state having first optical properties to a second state having second optical properties by means of an optical switch over signal. Then, the second state of the substance is adjusted with the switch over signal except for a spatially limited area. If the substance and the switch over signal are adapted to each other in such a way, that everywhere where the switch over signal exceeds a threshold value essentially the second state of the substance is adjusted, and if the spatial area purposefully omitted by the switch over signal is an intensity minimum of an interference pattern, the spatial area of the structure in which the substance is within the first state becomes smaller than the diffraction limit for the switch over signal.

    • An optical disk having excellent recording characteristics at both low speed and high speed is provided by modifying a cyanine dye serving as a material of a recording layer such that the cyanine dye does not excessively remain in a groove in an optically transparent substrate. The optical disc comprises the recording layer on a surface of the optically transparent substrate, a reflective layer on the recording layer, and a protective layer on the reflective layer, wherein the recording layer contains at least one cyanine dye expressed by the following chemical formula I: wherein, R1, R2 R3, R4, R5, and R6 are hydrocarbon groups, and A and B are independently a fused benzene ring or a fused naphthalene ring optionally having a substituent, and wherein the recording layer is formed by applying the at least one cyanine dye in a fluoroalcohol solvent to the optically transparent substrate.

    • An optical recording medium includes a recording layer containing a cyanine dye and a quencher and a light transmittance reducing section for reducing the transmission of ultraviolet rays to the recording layer, and the light transmittance reducing section is composed of at least one of a substrate and a function layer. When the component ratio of the quencher to the total number of moles of the cyanine dye and the quencher is shown by A and the transmittance of ultraviolet rays of the light transmittance reducing section is shown by B, the component ratio A and the transmittance B are defined to satisfy the following mathematical formulas (1) and (2).
