    • A disk drive has a resistive heater located near the read/write head as a thermal fly-height actuator and uses an improved method for operating the fly-height actuator. As part of the method, the heater may be deactivated during a seek to minimize the risk of head-disk contacts. When a write command is received, a level of heater power is applied to pre-heat the write head prior to writing the initial data sectors. This pre-heating heater power level may be higher than the power level used for writing. Then when writing commences, the lower power level is applied to the heater so the write head has the optimal head-disk spacing during the writing of all the data sectors, including the initial data sectors. Even though the heater may be deactivated during the seek the controller can initiate pre-heating during the last portion of the seek before the write head has reached the target track.

    • A magnetic disk drive comprises a recording medium, a slider, and an alignment device for aligning the slider with respect to the medium. No film made of liquid lubricant is disposed on the surface of the medium. The slider incorporates: a slider main body including a thin-film magnetic head element disposed near a medium facing surface; and a protection film made of a tetrahedral amorphous carbon film for protecting the medium facing surface. The alignment device makes the slider retreat from the surface of the medium when the medium is stopped, and makes the slider face toward the surface of the medium when the medium is rotated. The magnetic disk drive further comprises a distance control device for controlling the distance between the medium and the thin-film magnetic head element.

    • An air pressure sensor capable of measuring air pressure highly accurately with a simple configuration is provided. The sensor includes: a sealed case with a sealed space formed therein; a first thin plate member which constitutes at least a part of the wall of the sealed case and deforms to allow the capacity of the sealed space to vary corresponding to changes in the outside air pressure; a first PZT which contacts the first thin plate member to thereby detect the natural frequency thereof; and a second thin plate member which has the same vibration characteristics as those of the first thin plate member and is provided outside the sealed case while contacting it; and a second PZT which has the same temperature characteristics as those of the first PZT and contacts the second thin plate member to thereby detect the natural frequency thereof.

    • A thin film magnetic head is provided, in which the amount of protrusion in the periphery of an element portion can be reduced or a local temperature increase of electrode leads of a heating element can be prevented. The thin film magnetic head includes a playback element disposed between lower and upper shield layers, a recording element laminated on the upper shield layer, a heating element which is disposed below a coil layer and which generates heat to allow the playback element to protrude toward the recording medium side through thermal expansion, and a pair of electrode leads including overlapping regions, which are in contact with rear ends of the heating element and which overlap with the upper shield layer, and heat dissipation regions. Furthermore, connection wiring portions of the pair of electrode leads are disposed in a region sandwiched between the upper shield layer and a magnetic layer.
