    • A magnetic head retaining device, comprising a support member carrying a magnetic head which contacts a magnetic recording medium such as a magnetic card moving in one direction relative thereto and at least a pair of support holes provided downstream and upstream to the magnetic head on an imaginary line passing through the magnetic head in parallel to the direction of the motion of the magnetic recording medium and a mounting member having at least a pair of legs inserted through the corresponding support holes and a spring portion for biasing the legs downwards. Each of the legs is provided with a step for restricting the upward motion of the supporting member. By forming the mounting member out of a single plate, the device may have the flexibility required for achieving an intimate contact between the magnetic head and the magnetic medium and the rigidity required for accurately positioning the magnetic head.

    • A system for following a track on a moving data storage member having stored thereon a track following code. The code includes, on one side of the track centerline, a first area of magnetic flux of one polarity followed by a second area of magnetic flux of opposite polarity, and on the other side of the track centerline, a third area of magnetic flux of the opposite polarity followed by a fourth area of magnetic flux of the one polarity, the second and fourth areas commencing at substantially the same positions on the storage member. A transducer, positioned adjacent to the moving data storage member, senses the changes in magnetic flux as the code passes by and provides at its output one or more timing signals in response to the first and third areas passing and a residual signal in response to the second and third areas passing by. The residual signal is formed by the transducer measuring and summing the changes in flux of the second and fourth areas, the measured changes in flux related to the direction and distance of displacement of the transducer from a position where it is centered with respect to the track centerline. A decoder, receiving the output of the transducer, utilizes the timing signals to separate out the residual signal from the signals provided by the transducer.

    • Disclosed is a movable magnetic head block assembly for a double sided flexible magnetic disk storage device, wherein a pair of mutually opposed disk contacting surfaces, at least one of which comprises an electromagnetic transducer head, are in contact under pressure with the opposite sides of a magnetic disk so that information can be recorded or retrieved from the disk. To enable the unimpeded exchange of disks, an arrangement is provided whereby at least one of the disk contacting surfaces is mounted on an individual flexibly mounted retractable support arm which is normally urged under pressure against a stop, in the direction of the disk to place the disk contacting surfaces in position for normal operation, but which can be retracted against that pressure, thus withdrawing the disk contacting surface away from the surface of the disk, so that the disk may be exchanged without impediment. At least one of these flexibly mounted support arms is included in a position adjustable support arm assembly, comprising an arm which the head is mounted, an anchor member and a flexible means connecting the two, the adjustment of the position of the anchor member enabling the positioning of the disk contacting surface with respect to the rotational center of the disk to be effected, by a suitable known method, with accuracy, simply and reliably, without the requirement of any extraordinary skill.
