    • A system verifies an electronic signature. The electronic signature may be associated with timestamps, each including a time value. A timestamp verification module detects invalid certificates in a certificate chain of the electronic signature and records an earliest invalidity time value of the invalid certificates. The verification module also verifies the timestamps associated with the electronic signature and records the time value of the earliest valid timestamp. A declaration module declares the electronic signature as valid if the time value of the earliest valid timestamp is earlier than the earliest invalidity time value of the one or more invalid certificates. The electronic signature may alternatively or additionally be associated with countersignatures. A countersignature verification module verifies the countersignatures associated with the electronic signature, and the declaration module declares the electronic signature as valid if all of the countersignatures are determined to be valid.

    • A system and method for data recipient invoked electronic commerce allowing data subjects to provide information over a network and data recipients to receive such information relating to the needs of s data subject such as purchases, distribution of application information and the like. The system includes a server having software which gathers the information from a data subject to complete a transaction over a network. The system has a data subject data structure that stores information for registered data subjects. The software is able to access the data subject data structure and enter the data subject's information during subsequent transactions. Having the software obtain and enter the data subject's purchasing information, the data subject does not have to enter the same information every time the data subject desires to effect a transaction over the network. In alternate embodiments, the same technology can be applied to other arenas where a user may have to enter the same repetitive information.

    • A signing interface is disclosed for facilitating digital signing of electronic messages by a buyer or other subscribing party in an e-commerce or other context. The signing interface provides a mechanism by which a seller's Web applications may invoke a buyer's smartcard subsystem or other signing module to execute a digital signature. The signing interface preferably comprises a signing interface library and a signing plug-in resident on the buyer's computer. The signing interface library is preferably implemented as a Java package and associated libraries that are installed locally on the buyer's computer and made accessible to signed Java applets provided by the seller's Web server. The signing plug-in is preferably implemented as a plug-in, ActiveX control, or similar code that is installed locally on the buyer's computer and made accessible through the buyer's Web browser using an embedded browser object on a seller's Web page. In a preferred embodiment, the signing interface may be adapted to facilitate access to system services such as a warranty service provided via a four-corner trust model.

    • Disclosed is an electronic clearing system which electronically processes and clears a valuable instrument including a substrate and prescribed information printed on the substrate. The system has: an electronic clearing server; a payor's bank terminal which is installed in a payor's bank, and originally issues the valuable instrument; a payee's bank terminal which is installed in a payee's bank and to which the valuable instrument is presented; and an electronic network which electronically connects the electronic clearing server with each of the payor's bank terminal and the payee's bank terminal. In this system: the valuable instrument further includes code information printed on the substrate, the code information being obtained by converting substrate identification information, which differentiates each substrate from other substrates, into a specific format; the payor's bank terminal transmits the substrate identification information and the code information to the electronic clearing server; the electronic clearing server manages the substrate identification information and the code information with the substrate identification information and the code information associated with each other; the payee's bank terminal obtains the substrate identification information and the code information from the valuable instrument presented to the payee's bank, and transmits the substrate identification information and the code information to the electronic clearing server; and the electronic clearing server determines whether the valuable instrument presented to the payee's bank terminal is valid by comparing the substrate identification information and the code information as managed by the electronic clearing server, with the substrate identification information and the code information as transmitted from the payee's bank terminal.
