    • The present invention discloses an liquid crystal display (LCD) device comprising temperature measuring means. An adhesion material (5), situated either between the top (2) and bottom (3) sheets of the LCD (1) itself or between the LCD and a covering sheet, such as a printed circuit board or a touch screen, having a temperature dependent electrical property, is used as the temperature probe. The electrical property is preferably the electrical conductivity and the adhesion material (5) preferably encircles substantially the active area (4) of the LCD (1). Manufacturing and operational methods for such devices are also disclosed.

    • An optical switching element having a variable optical path length layer whose optical path length is varied and whose refractive index anisotropy is controlled by application of an external field; external field application device for applying the external field to the variable optical path length layer; a first non-varying optical path length layer formed at at least one surface of surfaces of the variable optical path length layer in a direction of thickness thereof, and having a refractive index which is greater than a maximum refractive index of the variable optical path length layer; and a second non-varying optical path length layer formed at at least one surface of the surfaces of the variable optical path length layer in the direction of thickness thereof, and having a refractive index which is less than a minimum refractive index of the variable optical path length layer. By controlling refractive index anisotropy of the variable optical path length layer, natural light can be modulated. Further, due to interference effects of the first and second non-varying optical path length layers, incident light can be controlled at a high contrast ratio especially in cases in which a specific wavelength is targeted. Accordingly, incident light can be used efficiently, and a good switching characteristic can be obtained.

    • A liquid crystal lens assembly that can be used to replace existing color lenses in traffic signals without the need for any special modifications to the traffic signal. The lens assembly utilizes a dichroic liquid crystal mixture that absorbs light when no electric field is applied to the mixture. When an electric field is applied across the liquid crystal mixture by two electrodes, the molecules change their orientation within the mixture and absorb less light, and the signal appears "on". The illumination of the bulb behind the lens assembly is visible to the user. The electric field is energized at the same time that the bulb for the traffic signal is illuminated. A colored transflector positioned in the rearward portion of the lens assembly provides the color for the signal and also acts to reflect light from the front of the lens assembly. Wires for applying the electric field to the electrodes connect directly to the terminal block for the traffic signal. A heater may be used to maintain the liquid crystal mixture at a minimum threshold temperature.
