    • A damper device comprising a first and second assembly suitable for guided relative displacement. The first assembly is supported stationarily with respect to a reference. The second assembly is supported for guided relative displacement with respect to the first assembly and the reference. A driving connection connects the second assembly and a system to be damped. A shoe rests against the first assembly and a resilient control that works in buckling is interposed between the shoe and the second assembly. The resilient control exerts a force on the shoe tending to urge the shoe against the first assembly during an active stage of damper device loading, corresponding to relative displacement in a first direction between the first and second assemblies and to reduce the force exerted by the shoe during a passive stage of damper device loading corresponding to relative displacement in a second direction between the first and second assemblies.

    • A shock absorbing suspension comprises a pair of parallel, spaced mounting plates (12), pairs of counter-rotating D-frames (13). Pair of frames is slidably attached to the inner side of the mounting plate 12' by two grippers 14 of the mounting plate 12 by two grippers 19. Resistance mechanism (65 and 66) are mounted on each gripper for substantially resisting the rotation of each individual frame in one direction only, such that the suspension will substantially resist being compacted together, but can be freely extended apart. In one application, the bottom mounting plate is attached to the ground, while the top mounting plate is attached to and supports a building. When at rest, the resistance mechanisms will provide enough resistance to allow the suspension to support the building without being compacted. When the ground jolts upwardly in an earthquake, the suspension will be compacted to absorb the upward motion of the ground. But, when the ground jolts downwardly, the suspension will freely extend. As a result, the suspension will safely isolate the building from the violent ground movements.

    • A strut connecting a transversely mounted engine to an automobile frame component accommodates normal engine oscillation within a limited range of motion, such occurs at idle, while restraining excessive engine motion such as occurs during acceleration. The strut includes a complementary pair of elongate plates slidably mounting therebetween at opposite ends a pair of friction elements each of which is compressed between the plates by attachment means for connecting the strut in place. The attachment means includes a pair of elastomeric blocks bonded to the plates and washers bonded to the blocks and interconnected by a sleeve passing transversely through apertures in the plates and the friciton element. The aperture in the friction element is smaller than the apertures in the plates to provide a gap around the attachment sleeve. The elastomeric blocks provide an elastic shear connection which permits the attachment sleeve to oscillate axially through a limited extent relative to the plates for accommodating normal engine oscillations while enabling the sleeve to engage the friction element and displace it between the plates for controlling and damping engine motion outside the permitted range.

    • An impact deflection absorber and stabilizer for providing an interface between two items, surfaces, etc. permitting regulated and controlled travel (energy absorption) along its longitudinal axis and constraining motion in all other directions. An energy absorbing spring is positioned within a housing comprised of two cylindrical mating surfaces forming a friction surface therebetween. A collar clamp joins the two cylinders together and adjustably controls the amount of friction between the two surfaces thereby providing control of the energy absorbing capability of the device. The clamp also has the effect of strengthening the device along non-longitudinal axes, such that all axes have a resonant or fundamental frequency higher than that along the longitudinal or primary axis whereby the device will yield longitudinally regardless of what direction the forces are emanating from.
