    • An engine speed governor for an engine having a multi-stage carburetor includes vacuum operated first and second governor actuators operatively connected to the primary and secondary throttle valves, respectively, of the carburetor and connected by separate conduits to the primary intake passage of the carburetor for venturi vacuum to effect selective closing of the primary and secondary throttle valves, and a solenoid governor valve having a normally open, first port operatively connected to the first governor actuator, a normally closed, second port operatively connected to the second governor actuator and a third port open to the atmosphere, the solenoid governor valve being connected to an engine speed sensing means whereby when the engine is below governed speed, the solenoid governor is de-energized, allowing air to bleed into the first governor actuator to keep it in a non-governing position while allowing vacuum to build up in the second governor actuator for normal operation of the secondary throttle valve, when with increasing speed the engine operates close to governed speed the solenoid governor valve is duty cycled, and when the engine operates at or above a governed speed, the solenoid governor valve is energized to allow vacuum build up in the first governor actuator to effect closing of the primary throttle valve, while allowing bleed air to flow to the second governor actuator to permit closing of the secondary throttle valve.

    • A carburetor for an internal combustion engine comprises a fuel idling circuit opening into the intake pipe downstream of a driver-actuated main throttle. Idle regulation means comprise a first pneumatic element connected to that part of the intake pipe downstream of the main throttle and a second pneumatic element having a movable part connected to the main throttle means by a unidirectional connection such that the throttle means can be opened to an additional extent. The second pneumatic element is subjected to the vacuum in a chamber connected to said part of the intake pipe and also connected to atmosphere by a valve carried by the movable part of the second element and opened by the first pneumatic element moving with respect to the second pneumatic element when there is an increase in the degree of vacuum in the intake pipe.

    • Apparatus and methods are disclosed for assisting the driver of an automobile driven by a drive system including an internal combustion engine to improve fuel economy. The internal combustion engine drive system has an air intake manifold, a throttle valve, an accelerator pedal and a linkage coupling the accelerator pedal to the throttle valve. The effective length of the linkage between the accelerator pedal and the throttle valve is biased to an extreme value at which the throttle valve is in a closed position when the engine is deactivated. The existence and intensity of a vacuum in the air intake manifold is determined. The effective length of the mentioned linkage is maintained biased at the extreme value at vacuum intensities up to a vacuum intensity existing in the air intake manifold at an idling rate of rotation of the internal combustion engine. On the other hand, the effective length of the mentioned linkage is varied so as to actuate the throttle valve toward a closing position in response to vacuum intensities above the vacuum intensity existing at the idling rate of rotation.

    • A throttle opener comprises a diaphragm apparatus installed between a throttle valve provided within a throttle bore and an air pump for delivering air to an air injection device for controlling the opening of the throttle to enhance the burning of an air-fuel mixture, thereby decreasing the amount of unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas. The diaphragm apparatus includes a diaphragm member movably fixed therein, responsive to the high delivery pressure from the air pump at the beginning of deceleration period of a vehicle to open the throttle valve slightly enough to prevent misfire of the mixture, thus decreasing the amount of unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas.
