    • A highly mobile, compact creel that utilizes frames for holding yarn packages (or bobbins) for feeding yarn to a tufting machine. Each frame includes holders affixed to the frame for holding yarn packages facing front and back, a header attachable to the frame for directing yarn from the yarn packages to the tufting machine, and anti-static flexible tubing for leading yarn from the holders to the header. The header provides for aligning all the yarn ends in the same plane to join them to ends already threaded into the tufting machine. An optional frame overlay upright having a ring affixed thereto and strands threaded through the ring prevents yarn from upper yarn packages from falling onto tubes holding lower yarn packages causing yarn entanglement.

    • This invention concerns the production of so called “hand tufted rugs”, carpets and wall hangings by use a “tufting machine” which employs a single hollow needle through which yarn is fed into a backing fabric, to form tufts of yarn. The machine comprises a yarn cutter, in the tufting head, which is selectively operable to cause the tufts to be cut or loop pile. A computer operated motion control system is operable under the control of a machine readable tufting design pattern comprising a series of vectors and associated control codes, to drive the tufting gun as follows: (a) to operate the mechanism and reciprocate the needle to insert tufts into backing fabric. (b) to operate the movement system and move the needle across a two-dimensional plane while inserting tufts, in accordance with the vectors. (c) to lift and lower the foot, in accordance with respective control codes. And, (d) to selectively operate the yarn cutter, in accordance with respective control codes.

    • A yarn feeder for a tufting machine is compact and simple in structure and is still capable of freely changing the heights of piles formed by each pile yarn on a fabric. The yarn feeder includes yarn feed rolls for feeding pile yarns to a row of needles of the tufting machine, and a brake device provided between the feed rolls and the needles. The brake device includes a grooved plate having grooves arranged in the width direction of the grooved plate and each receiving one of the pile yarns that are being fed from the feed rolls to the needles, and presser members each opposing one of the grooves. The presser members are movable toward and away from the respective grooves independently of one another. By pressing selected one or ones of the presser members against the bottoms of the corresponding grooves with yarns sandwiched therebetween, the feed rates of the yarns can be freely changed independently of one another without unduly increasing the size of the yarn feeder or complicating its structure.

    • A tension device is utilized for equalizing, or at least reducing differentials in tension across strands in a web. The device utilizes an overfeed roll which rotates faster than the speed of feeding the web. Strands at the desired tension, or less, slip about the exterior surface of the overfeed roll. Strands which are greater than the desired tension have sufficient friction to be rotated, at least temporarily, by the overfeed roll to thereby create slack in the higher tension strands to equalize the tension relative to the other strands. Feedback from feed rolls, support rolls, and/or the overfeed roll may be utilized to adjust the speed of the overfeed roll.
