    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for the production of a novel industrial polyester filament yarn of improved uniformity wherein a plurality of filaments are melt-spun into a heated zone coupled with controlled cooling. The yarn produced has improved long and short term Uster uniformity and improved uniformity of physical properties, particularly breaking strength, as shown by a reduced standard deviation of breaking strength. The yarn is produced by melt spinning into a heated zone which maintains the filaments molten for intervals below the spinneret face and subsequently quenching the filaments with a radial outflow of cooling gases, thereby producing a low birefringence yarn which is capable of being drawn at high draw ratios to high tenacities.

    • An improved process and apparatus for production of synthetic multifilamentary yarns having uniform quality. The method comprises extruding a molten synthetic polymer downwardly through a spinneret, advancing the extruded filaments downwardly through a substantially stationary column of heated air, and subsequently advancing the filaments downwardly through a quenching zone wherein they are in contact with cooling air introduced into the path of the filaments under controlled conditions of air velocity and direction of flow. The apparatus for carrying out the process comprises an extrusion spinneret for extruding a number of filaments directly into a heated sleeve having walls that are imperforate, said heated sleeve leading to a quenching chamber having opposite, essentially vertical inlet and outlet panels for allowing cooling air to pass through the chamber, and means for regulating the stream of cooling air whereby both the velocity of the air stream going through the quenching chamber and its general direction as it contacts the descending filaments may be regulated.

    • An object of the present invention is to provide a fiber made of polylactic acid and having excellent strength, heat resistance and heat shrinkage resistance and a manufacturing method thereof. The present invention relates to the fiber is made of a composition which includes (i) poly(L-lactic acid) having a weight average molecular weight of 50,000 to 300,000 (component A), (ii) poly(D-lactic acid) having a weight average molecular weight of 50,000 to 300,000 (component B) and (iii) 0.01 to 5 parts by weight of a phosphate metal salt (component C) based on 100 parts by weight of the total of the components A and B and has a strength of 2.5 to 10 cN/dTex and a manufacturing method thereof.
