    • An apparatus (10) for inflating an inflatable vehicle occupant restraint, such as an air bag (12), includes a collision sensor (24), an inflator (14), and first and second initiators (18,20). The collision sensor (24) senses the occurrence and the severity of a vehicle collision. The inflator (14) contains pressurized inflation fluid and ignitable material (60) heating the inflation fluid. The first initiator (18) initiates a flow of the pressurized inflation fluid from the inflator (14). The second initiator (20) ignites the ignitable material (60). A temperature sensor (26) senses the ambient temperature of the inflator (14). A controller (22) actuates the first initiator (18) at an initial time in response to the occurrence of the vehicle collision. The controller (22) actuates the second initiator (20) after the lapse of a delay time which is determined by the controller (22) with reference to the ambient temperature and the severity of the vehicle collision.

    • An apparatus (10) for inflating an inflatable vehicle occupant restraint (12) includes a collision sensor (52) and an inflator assembly (20). The collision sensor (52) provides a collision signal indicating the occurrence of a vehicle collision. The inflator assembly (20) includes a first source (22) of inflation fluid which, when actuated, provides a first volume of inflation fluid. The inflator assembly (20) further includes a second source (24) of inflation fluid which, when actuated, provides a second volume of inflation fluid which differs from the first volume. A position sensor (70) provides a position signal indicating a position of an occupant of the vehicle. A controller (50) actuates the first and second sources (22, 24) of inflation fluid in any one of a plurality of differing modes of operation in response to the collision signal and the position signal.

    • A vehicle subject to high level and low level impact conditions includes an occupant restraint cushion which is inflated at a relatively high rate under high impact conditions and at a relatively low rate under low level impact conditions. The inflator for the cushion includes a pressure vessel containing pressurized stored gas and a combustion chamber containing a propellant. Under low level impact conditions, the propellant is ignited and the resultant gases flow through a fluted orifice into the pressure vessel and then flow with the stored gas to the cushion. The area of the orifice controls the flow rate of the resultant gases out of the combustion chamber to control the pressure within the chamber and the burn rate. Under high level impact conditions, a ball within the combustion chamber is explosively fired into the orifice to restrict the flow area of the orifice. This increases the pressure within the combustion chamber to increase the burn rate and the flow rate to the cushion.
