The main body covers a gap between the windshield plate and an automobile body panel, and has a reference point which is more spaced from the outer surface of the windshield plate along the side portion than along the upper portion. A lip section of the main body can be maintained in contact with the outer surface of the windshield plate along the upper portion with a first angle, and spaced therefrom along the side portion with a second, less steep angle. A weir of a refined appearance, with desired cross-sectional area or height, is defined along the side portion, between the windshield plate and the lip section, and prevents water on the windshield plate from flowing across the molding member.

The holder is attached to the body panel, the main molding is engaged with the holder at the left and right side sections of the molding, and the glass panel is fixed by the auxiliary molding inserted between a head and the upper engaging portion of the main molding. At the upper section of the molding the glass panel is fixed to the lower face of the head of the main molding without using the auxiliary molding. The holder can be formed as a continuous piece or as a number of discrete holder sections.

A method of producing the molding includes the step of extruding molding material through a hollow portion formed by the dies. The shape of the hollow portion is changed by moving the dies according to the cross-sectional shape of the molding, thereby widening part of the hollow portion of the dies to increase the thickness of the molding material. One of the dies is projected into the widened part of the hollow portion to form a water drain channel on a large thickness portion of the molding.

The ornamental or trimming member has such a predetermined profile that, when the assembly is mounted in place, the ornamental or trimming member is in abutment with outer surface of the window plate along the upper portion while it is spaced from the outer surface of the window plate along the side portion. A weir member is secured to the ornamental or trimming member to form a weir between the outer surface of the window plate and the ornamental or trimming member along the side portion.

Further, each of the molding portions has an upper decoration portion, a lower clamp lip and a metal fitting connecting the upper decoration portion to the lower clamp lip.
