    • A colored plastics molding device with which calibration is automatically performed, and thus the colorant can be charged, being free from wrong calculation and error, therefore, high-quality colored plastics molded items can be obtained. The colored plastics molding device 1 comprises a hopper 2 which stores a raw plastics material for molding having a thermoplasticity and discharges the raw plastics material stored; a cylindrical transfer member 3 which transfers the raw plastics material from this hopper 2; a colorant supply means 5 which supplies a liquid colorant to the inside of said transfer member 3, the discharge end of a freely replaceable nozzle 23 being disposed there; a conveying means 4 which mixes the raw plastics material fed through said transfer means 3 with the colorant, while conveying the mixture for molding; a detection means 12 which detects the conveying state of said conveying means 4; and a control means 25 which performs operation control of said colorant supply means 5 on the basis of the result of detection by this detection means 12; wherein said colorant supply means has an automatic calibration function which allows automatic setting of the quantity of liquid colorant to be supplied.

    • Method and apparatus for producing steerable coated guidewires and the steerable guidewires produced thereby. The steerable coated guidewire has an inner wire member having a constant outer diameter over a major segment thereof and a tapered outer decreasing diameter over a minor segment thereof and a coating adhered to the inner wire member. The coating has a constant outer diameter such that the coated steerable guidewire has a constant outer diameter. The diameter decreases preferably in a linear manner over the length of the minor segment from a maximum diameter Dmax to a minimum diameter Dmin. The apparatus for producing the guidewires has an extrusion device having an extruder cross-head through which the coated wire advances, preferably a caterpillar haul-off machine for advancing the wire at a haul-off rate controlled by a processor generated control signal, a programmable microprocessor for generating haul-off/take-off control signals, the controlled haul-off rate thereby causing the wire to be coated with variable thickness coating such that the outer diameter of the resulting steerable coated guidewire is substantially constant.

    • A system for providing process control information, such as viscosity, concerning a polymer melt comprises a means containing a polymer melt under pressure; means for diverting a stream of the polymer melt directly from said containing means to and through an orifice of predetermined geometrical shape wherein the flow of said diverted portion to and through said orifice is unobstructed and directly dependent on the pressure of said main polymer melt wherein the cross sectional area is sized to permit the flow of said diverted melt polymer therethrough absence additional independent means acting on said diverted melt polymer for increasing flow through said orifice; temperature sensing means for measuring the temperature of the diverted melt stream and producing a resultant temperature signal; pressure sensing means for measuring the pressure of the diverted melt stream and producing a resultant pressure signal, said pressure signal being directly dependent on the pressure of polymer in said main polymer melt and the predetermined size of said orifice; means weighing at least a portion of said diverted melt stream discharged through said orifice, said weighing means including weight sensing means for measuring the weight of diverted melt stream and producing a resultant weight signal; and computer means responsive to the temperature, pressure and weight signals for determining process characteristics of the main polymer melt.
