The upper surface includes an end rake surface inclined downward as departing from the end cutting edge, a pair of front protrusions that is located apart from the end cutting edge and are less apart from each other as departing from the end cutting edge, a rear protrusion further apart from the end cutting edge than the pair of front protrusions, and a pair of intermediate protrusions located between the front protrusions and the rear protrusion. Top portions of the pair of intermediate protrusions are respectively located between the front protrusions and the rear protrusion, and are higher than top portions of the front protrusions and a top portion of the rear protrusion.

摘要： A cutting insert incorporates a pre-formed discrete cutting tip which wraps around a curved cutting corner of the insert. The cutting tip includes a top layer and a bottom layer made of a relatively harder material than the top layer. In one embodiment, the bottom layer is made of polycrystalline diamond (PCD) or a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (CBN) material and the top layer is made of cemented carbide. The cutting insert may further incorporate a chip control structure formed in the cutting tip including a plurality of facets formed on each side of a centerline for providing chip control during a cutting operation. The chip control structure can be formed in a two-step process to expose a portion of the bottom layer. The discrete cutting tip can be brazed to the cutting insert prior to forming the chip control structure.

The chip breaking ramp surfaces form a series of non-collinear lines that are at a non-zero angle with respect to the cutting edge.

The wafer or coating may be formed of a thickness up to about 1000 microns for improved wear life. The density of material within the wafer or coating may be varied according to desired parameters, and a gradient of particle sizes for the cBN may be presented across the thickness of the material.
