    • Filter media includes a first layer of porous filter media having first and second opposite sides and first and second edges; a first porous screen oriented on the second side of the first layer of porous filter media, the first porous screen having first and second edges; a second layer of porous filter media having first and second opposite sides and first and second edges, the second side of the second layer of porous media oriented on the first porous screen, a first sealant securing the first layer, first screen, and second layer together adjacent to the first edges of the first layer, first screen, and second layer; a second screen oriented on the first side of the second layer, the second screen having first and second edges; and a second sealant securing the second screen and the second layer adjacent to the second edges of the second screen and second layer. The filter media can be coiled into a filter element resulting in a plurality of dirty fluid inlets between the first layer second side and second layer second side, and a plurality of clean fluid outlets between the first layer first side and second layer first side. Methods of making filter elements include providing a four layered construction of media, screen, media, and screen, and then coiling it into a filter element.

    • A method and apparatus are provided, for forming a filter element including a media pack in the form of a coiled web of fluted filter media, by feeding the web of fluted filter media at a controlled linear speed onto a mandrel rotated by a winding motor providing a controlled driving torque to the mandrel, to thereby maintain a controlled tension on the web of fluted filter media as the web is wound onto the mandrel. The web may be fed at a substantially constant linear speed to the mandrel, and/or the winding motor may be controlled in a manner providing substantially constant driving torque to the mandrel for maintaining a constant tension on the web as a function of the constant driving torque. Coiled media packs having circular or non-circular cross sections, can be formed with either cored, or core-less construction.

    • Resin having a susceptibility to electrostatic charge which is opposite in polarity to the susceptibility to electrostatic charge of a filter sheet or member forming a filter element is impregnated into the filter member. For example, when the filter member is composed of polyester of 50-70 weight percentage and glass fiber of 5-25 weight percentage as well as pulp of 15-35 weight percentage, resin composed of phenol resin of 5-20 weight percentage and melamine resin of 80-95 weight percentage is impregnated into the filter member so that the susceptibility to electrostatic charge of the filter member can be neutralized. Thus, static electricity generated by friction between the filter element and fuel flowing therethrough can be controlled.
