摘要： The needle combination includes an insertion stylet which has a small diameter and is rigid. The tip of the insertion stylet is sharp for ease of insertion into the prostate. A needle sleeve has a larger diameter than the insertion stylet and is inserted into the prostate around the insertion stylet. A needle is loaded with radioactive seeds and spacers and is inserted, along with an implant stylet, into the sleeve after the insertion stylet has been removed. The needle and the sleeve are then removed together, while holding the implant stylet in place, so that the seeds are deposited in the prostate in desired locations.

摘要： Method, apparatus, and a substance is disclosed for releasing at a temperature above normal tissue temperature an anti-cancer drug and applying heat in combination to tissue having neoplastic cells such as a malignant brain tumor. The apparatus comprises a probe having a semi-rigid elongated member that is interstitially implanted in the malignant tumor. The elongated member is coated with a carrier substance that is responsive at a temperature above normal tissue temperature for releasing a carried substance such as a therapeutic anti-cancer drug. Within the elongated member, an electrical heater element produces heat when energized for heating the probe, the carrier substance, the anti-cancer drug, and the surrounding tissue. An electrical thermistor is also included within the elongated member for measuring the temperature of the probe in order to regulate the release of the drug and the temperature of the surrounding tissue. The method includes interstitially implanting the elongated member of the probe in the tumor, energizing the electrical heater element, releasing the drug in response to the heat to effect one treatment, and heating the tissue and drug to effect a second treatment. The combination of the heat and drug treatments then has an effectiveness level greater than the effectiveness levels of the heat and drug treatments individually. The coating layer substance includes a combination of a carrier and a carried substance for releasing the carried substance at a predetermined temperature above normal tissue temperature.

摘要： Position locating device for interstitial radiotherapy of a body portion comprising a flexible sheet member for being received about and conformed with a body portion which is to receive radiotherapy, the sheet member having a plurality of spaced position locating means, and attachment means for releaseably securing the sheet member about the body portion. The position locating means of the sheet member comprises a plurality of spaced openings arranged in rows and columns, and the attachment means comprises a pair of clamping units securing a plurality of bands with the ends of the sheet member. The clamping units are detachably secured with the sheet member for being replaced and repositioned therewith and the first ends of the bands are pivotally secured with the respective clamping units, while the second ends of each of the bands of one of the clamping units is detachably securable with a corresponding one of the second ends of the bands of the other clamping unit. The method comprises positioning a flexible sheet member having a plurality of spaced openings over a body portion which is to receive interstitial radiotherapy, conforming the sheet member with the surface of the body portion and securing its position thereon, marking the locations of selected openings of the sheet member onto the surface of the body portion, and thereafter removing the sheet member from the body portion.

摘要： Embodiments of the present invention provide methods and systems for proton therapy planning that maximize the dose rate for different target sizes for FLASH therapy treatment are disclosed herein according to embodiments of the present invention. According to embodiments, non-standard scanning patterns can be generated, for example, using a TPS optimizer, to maximize dose rate and the overall FLASH effect for specific volumes at risk. The novel scanning patterns can include scanning subfields of a field that are scanned independently or spiral-shaped patterns, for example. In general, spot locations and beam paths between spots are optimized to substantially achieve a desired dose rate in defined regions of the patient's body for FLASH therapy treatment.
