    • The invention provides an improved method of rearing a bird of specified germ-free status. Specifically, the present invention is directed to a method for increasing the hatchability and viability of surgically derived eggs of germ-free status when obtained from a parent bird. The method comprises housing a bird as a parent bird, determining the position of a premature egg in the reproductive tract and stage of development of the premature egg in terms of shell formation and calcification, surgically removing an egg in its shell from the parent bird prior to transfer of the egg to the cloaca in the parent bird, incubating the egg and hatching the egg to produce a laying bird. The invention also relates to the production of avian eggs of specified germ-free status and uses thereof.

    • A birdcage watering device is provided with a no-spill valve and method of attachment. The watering device comprises a valve attached to a water chamber comprising an extended leg such that when the watering device is completely assembled the valve may be displaced to fill trough. Particularly, the extended leg of the valve produces an angled opening to permit flow of water from the water chamber without clogging or getting “stuck” in the valve opening. The water chamber is easily removed for refilling and the valve is designed to prevent the spilling of water during the process. A method of attachment is also described that allows the device to be on the outside of the birdcage while being secured from the inside of the cage, thus allowing for easy refilling of the water chamber of the device.

    • A non-lethal method of cock fighting includes providing each gamecock (12a, 12b) with a garment such as a vest (16a, 16b) or collar (100a, 100b) that at least partially covers the body of the gamecock and carries a sensor (19a-19e, 103-107) at a predetermined location on the garment and a signal transmission device (20). The signal transmission device generates a signal when the sensor is struck by a gamecock. The spurs (12c) of each gamecock are covered with a protective device (60) to prevent the spurs from causing injury during the cock fight and their beaks (12d) are taped shut. A scoring apparatus (26) is provided that is responsive to the signal and includes a visual display that displays a numerical score for each gamecock. The numerical score is based, at least in part, on the number strikes detected by the sensor being struck over a predetermined time period during the cock fight.
