    • 970,426. Electrically heated billet containers. SCHLOEMANN A.G. Jan. 24, 1962 [Feb. 9, 1961], No. 2584/62. Heading H5H. The billet container of a metal extrusion or tube press has tubular hairpin-shaped resistance heating elements mounted in bores extending axially or radially within the container casing from its end or peripheral surfaces. The resistance elements 10, Fig. 1, are mounted in axial bores 9 of the casing 2, within which is shrunk a sleeve 3 for the billets 4 which are extruded through die 7 by ram 5. A steel radiation plate 35, Fig. 4a, may be soldered to the flange 36, which is screwed to the casing at 37 to close the end of the bore and support the heating element, leads to which are contained in annular groove 11. Alternatively, two elements may be mounted in each bore, with their planes at right angles to one another (Figs. 5a, 5b, not shown). The elements are connected in three groups fed by a star-connected three-phase supply, thermocouples T with associated switching relays measuring and controlling the temperature of the three groups, and of the ram and the die end of the container, whereby a uniform or a desired non-uniform temperature distribution may be maintained (Figs. 6 to 9, not shown).
