    • The invention provides methods and compositions relating to DNA Fragmentation Factor (DFF) polypeptides and related nucleic acids. More particularly, the present invention provides the sequence for the active subunit of DFF. The polypeptides may be produced recombinantly from host cells transformed from the disclosed DFF encoding nucleic acids or purified from human cells. The invention provides isolated DFF, hybridization probes and primers capable of specifically hybridization with the disclosed DFF genes, DFF-specific binding agents such as specific antibodies, and methods of making and using the subject compositions.

    • A bandgap circuit for producing a constant current having a controllable temperature coefficient. A current mirror supplies first and second substantially identical currents to first and second bipolar transistors. A first resistor is connected across the emitters of the bipolar transistors. A second resistor connects one to the bipolar emitters to a common terminal where the current source currents are recombined and supplied to a common terminal of a power supply. The band gap voltage produced at the common base connections of the bipolar transistors have a voltage temperature coefficient which is controlled by the values of the resistors. A current source is coupled to receive the bandgap voltage and produces a current having a temperature coefficient corresponding to the voltage temperature coefficient of the bandgap voltage.

    • An improved interference cancellation technique is disclosed. Digital baseband circuitry (40) includes user and symbol detection circuitry (50) for performing a Gibbs sampler type of interference cancellation, either embodied in custom hardware (44) or in software. Random initial guesses for a signal sample (either a symbol or chip) are made for each user. Interference cancellation is performed on a user-by-user basis, using the then-current data decision values for the other, interfering users. A soft data decision is used to derive a probability distribution function for the actual data decision for the sample for the user. A randomly selected value is applied against the probability distribution function to generate the next data decision value for that user, and the process is repeated until convergence. Following convergence, a statistic is used to select a final data decision value for each user, from the set of intermediate data decision values stored in memory.

    • The invention provides methods and compositions for enhancing apoptosis of pathogenic cells. The general method comprises the of contacting the cells with an effective amount of an AV peptoid, wherein the AV peptoid is a peptide comprising AX1, wherein X1 is V, I or L, or a peptide mimetic thereof, which interacts with an Inhibitor of Apoptosis protein (IAP) as measured by IAP binding, procaspase-3 activation or promotion of apoptosis, wherein apoptosis of the pathogenic cells is enhanced. The subject compositions encompass pharmaceutical compositions comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a subject AV peptoid in dosage form and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, wherein the AV peptoid is a peptide comprising AX1, wherein X1 is V, I or L, or a peptide mimetic thereof, which inhibits the activity of an Inhibitor of Apoptosis protein (IAP) as measured by IAP binding, procaspase-3 activation or promotion of apoptosis. The invention also provides assays for identifying agents which modulates the interaction of an AV peptoid with an IAP, active compounds identified in such screens and their use in the foregoing compositions and therapeutic methods.

    • A cell-free system based on the cytosol of normally growing cells, which reproduces measurable aspects of the apoptotic program, is provided. The apoptotic program is initiated by addition of DATP in the specific exemplification of the HeLa 100,000×g supernatant. Fractionation of the cytosol yielded a 15 kDa protein, identified by absorption spectrum and protein sequence as cytochrome c, that is required for in vitro apoptosis. Elimination of cytochrome c from cytosol by immunodepletion or inclusion of sucrose to stabilize mitochondria during cytosol preparation, diminished the apoptotic activity. Addition of exogenous cytochrome c to cytochrome c-depleted extracts restored apoptotic activity. Cells undergoing apoptosis in vivo showed increased release of cytochrome c to their cytosol, suggesting that mitochondria may function in apoptosis by releasing cytochrome c.
