    • Electronic devices and equipment may communicate over a wired communications path. The wired communications path may include one or more wires and may be associated with a headphone cable. Data may be conveyed in the form of a digital data stream containing multiple traffic channels. The digital data stream may include superframes, each of which has multiple frames of data. The frames of data may each contain a number of data slots. Some of the slots in a superframe may be used exclusively by a particular one of the traffic channels. Boundary slots may be shared between traffic channels. Data interface circuitry may implement a data dispersion algorithm that determines the pattern in which data from each traffic channel is distributed within each boundary slot. Transmitting data interface circuitry may merge traffic channels into a single data stream. Receiving data interface circuitry may reconstruct the traffic channels.

    • Electronic devices and accessories such as headsets for electronic devices are provided. A microphone may be included in an accessory to capture sound for an associated electronic device. Buttons and other user interfaces may be included in the accessories. An accessory may have an audio plug that connects to a mating audio jack in an electronic device, thereby establishing a wired communications path between the accessory and the electronic device. Path configuration circuitry may be used to selectively configure the path between the electronic device and accessory to support different operational modes. Analog audio lines in the wired path may convey left and right channel analog audio channels. When it is desired to convey power over the wired path, one of the analog audio channel lines may be converted to a power line. Audio functionality may be retained by simultaneously converting a unidirectional line into a bidirectional line using hybrids.

    • A method and apparatus for determining a relationship between an input signal frequency and a reference signal frequency is envisioned. The system derives a plurality of internal reference signals from the reference signal. The internal reference signals are provided to a level detection circuit which in turn samples the input signal a number of times within a period of time. Values associated with these samples are stored, as is one value of a sample from a previous period. The stored samples are correlated, and a relationship between the input signal frequency and the reference signal frequency is derived.
