    • High-frequency couplers and coupling techniques are described utilizing artificial composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL). Three specific forms of couplers are described; (1) a coupled-line backward coupler is described with arbitrary tight/loose coupling and broad bandwidth; (2) a compact enhanced-bandwidth hybrid ring coupler is described with increased bandwidth and decreased size; and (3) a dual-band branch-line coupler that is not limited to a harmonic relation between the bands. These variations are preferably implemented in a microstrip fabrication process and may use lumped-element components. The couplers and coupling techniques are directed at increasing the utility while decreasing the size of high-frequency couplers, and are suitable for use with separate coupler or couplers integrated within integrated devices.

    • The periodic array of photodiodes are disposed in a passive optical waveguide electrically coupled in series with each other by microwave transmission line. The collective array of photodiodes coupled to the optical waveguide and microwave transmission line results in an increased bandwidth-efficiency product for the photodetector array as compared to any single photodetector within the array. High optical-to-electrical conversion efficiencies near unity are achieved at frequencies as high as several hundred GHz. High efficiencies are achieved by matching the group velocity of the optical waves within the optical waveguide with the group velocity of electrical signals being transmitted in the microwave transmission line by appropriate selection of the capacitance of each of the photodiodes. Power saturation is improved by decreasing the optical density within the active layer of the photodiodes. Optical coupling efficiencies from optical fibers into and from the optical waveguide are further improved by enlarging the optical mode size in the optical waveguide.

    • An object of the present invention is to provide an optical multiplexing apparatus and a projector that keep an optical system small, and easily adjust a number of light source units. The optical multiplexing apparatus has: a light source section that uses light source units to emit collimated beams; a first lens portion that converges the collimated beams which enter at different incident angles from each other to define converging positions; and a second lens portion that has focal points that correspond to the converging positions, respectively, wherein the first and second lens portions form an optical reduction system, and an optical axis of the second lens portion, which is directed to the corresponding focal point to one of the converging positions, extends along another optical axis of the second lens position, which is directed to the corresponding focal point to another of the converging positions.

    • An analysis apparatus which analyses a state of a specimen and includes: a temperature adjustment unit which lowers a temperature of the specimen by cooling the specimen; a light source which heats at least a part of the specimen cooled by the temperature adjustment unit, by illuminating the specimen with light; a first temperature measurement unit which measures a temperature change of the specimen caused by the heating by the light source; and an analysis unit which analyzes the state of the specimen based on the temperature change of the specimen. For example, the first temperature measurement unit has an ultrasonic probe which transmits an ultrasonic pulse to the specimen and receives a reflected wave that is the ultrasonic pulse reflected from the specimen, and measures the temperature of the specimen based on a signal of the reflected wave.
