    • A micro-electro-mechanical (MEMs) mirror device for use in an optical switch is disclosed. A “piano”-style MEMs device includes an elongated platform pivotally mounted proximate the middle thereof by a torsional hinge. The middle portion of the platform and the torsional hinge have a combined width less than the width of the rest of the platform, whereby several of these “piano” MEMs devices can be positioned adjacent each other pivotally mounted about the same axis with only a relatively small air gap therebetween. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention specially designed for wavelength switching applications, a greater range of arcuate motion for a mirror mounted thereon is provided by enabling the platform to rotate about two perpendicular axes. The MEMs mirror device according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention enables the mirror to tilt about two perpendicular axes, by the use of an “internal” gimbal ring construction, which ensures that a plurality of adjacent mirror devices have a high fill factor, without having to rely on complicated and costly manufacturing processes. To limit the amount of electrical crosstalk between adjacent mirrors, shielding can be positioned between the electrodes. The shielding can extend upwardly from the substrate and/or downwardly from the undersurface of the mirrors. When both types of shielding are provided, one set is offset from the other to prevent abutment thereof, and to enable an overlapping effect, which enhances the protection.

    • A radio frequency transmission device including electronic circuitry. A digital logic circuit is alternate-able from a sleep mode to an active mode after a pre-determined time period, and back to the sleep mode immediately after transmission of a digital signal. The digital signal includes a unique and pre-determined sequence of fixed length pulses routed to a transmission circuit to transmit a radio signal in a specific frequency range. An output display signal from the output circuitry is displayed with an LED. An input circuitry is manually activated. A radio frequency signal is received with a receiver circuitry, sensed to determine if the received signal has a compatible characteristic of an expected signal. The radio frequency signal is converted into a digital form and sent to the microprocessor. Every associated transmitter device is tracked with a counter maintained by a microprocessor. Personnel, belongings and pets can be tracked with this device.

    • An apparatus and method for conserving power on a mobile device through motion awareness. The method includes a motion model that receives location information from one or more receivers and an accelerometer. The motion model determines whether the mobile device is in motion based on the received information. If the mobile device is in motion, a scanning rate for the one or more receivers is determined based on a velocity vector, the velocity vector being determined from the received information; the determined scanning rate is sent to the one or more receivers to enable them to operate at the determined scanning rate; and the process is repeated. If the mobile device is not in motion, the scanning operations for the one or more receivers are halted while the mobile device is stationary; scanning operations for the one or more receivers are resumed when an indication that the mobile device is moving again is received from the accelerometer; and the process is repeated.

    • To personalize a voice information delivery service, e.g., directory assistance, a voice email service, stock quotation service and other information assistance services, a user is afforded an option to customize automated voices/speeches to deliver information to him/her. The automated voices/speeches may be customized for different services and functions, and/or in terms of urgency, context, etc. of the information to be voice-delivered. In an illustrative embodiment, the user's voice preferences for voice information deliveries are recorded in a user profile, which are represented by sets of speech characterizing parameters, respectively, based on which a text-to-speech (TTS) engine reads given text information to the user in the corresponding preferred voices/speeches.
