    • A sling for carrying an elongate item such as a shoulder weapon having a buttstock and a forward end. In one embodiment, a bight of relatively small strap material is held in a sling swivel by a stopper mounted on the bight so that it can be passed through the sling swivel when the bight is slack, but which seats against the sling swivel when the bight is tight, keeping the bight engaged with the sling swivel. In another embodiment, a stopper keeps a bight of a stock-encircling strap engaged with a sling swivel, preventing the sling swivel from marring the stock.

    • A sling for a shoulder weapon, such as a military assault rifle or carbine, in which the effective length of the sling can be extended quickly and quietly and then easily and quietly retracted to the original length. A quick release plate and an engagement member cooperate to hold a loop of strap material to provide the shorter configuration of the sling, and the quick release plate can pass over the engagement member to lengthen the sling when the quick release plate is turned to a position perpendicular to the length of the sling. The opposite ends of the sling can be attached to a weapon using secure, quiet fittings.

    • A grounding assembly for testing which can be readily changed is provided by an insert which is retained within an opening in a test socket. Flexible projections from the socket fit within grooves in the insert to provide the retention means. The insert is positioned within an opening in the socket adjacent to an opening containing a device under test (DUT). The insert is also between the DUT and a test board, and has contacts arranged such they connect ground contacts on the DUT to opposing contacts on the test board. The insert can provide different numbers, arrangements, and types of contacts as well as different materials for both the contact and contact body by merely changing the insert.

    • A method and apparatus for recording image information on a moving receiver media at a thermal print station features a ribbon cassette assembly that stores a thermal ribbon having dye, the thermal ribbon being supported as a supply role and take-up role on the ribbon cassette assembly, the ribbon cassette assembly including a wall structure defining a plenum chamber. Air under pressure is provided to the plenum chamber. An elongated thermal print head is positioned in engagement with the thermal ribbon; and recording elements on the thermal print head are directed along a main scan direction. The print head has associated therewith a heat sink that includes a series of parallel fins arranged along the length of the print head and the fins are oriented at least generally perpendicular to the main scan direction of printing. Cooling air flows from the wall structure, which structure extends in the direction of elongation of the print head. The wall structure has one or more openings along the direction of elongation, the cooling air being directed generally to sweep in the direction of the fins so that the cooling air advances generally in a direction generally parallel to the advancement direction of the receiver media at the printing station.

    • A method is provided for operating an RF transponder system to detect the presence of an RFID device in the proximal space of an RF reader unit having an excitation signal generator circuit and an RFID device detection circuit. The excitation signal generator circuit unit initially operates in a reduced power state, generating ring signals in response to a reduced electrical current and transmitting the ring signals into the proximal space. The RFID device detection circuit evaluates the ring signals to determine variations in an RFID device detection parameter. When the variations pass a variation threshold level due to the presence of the RFID device, the ring signals are terminated and the excitation signal generator circuit switches to an increased power state, wherein the excitation signal generator circuit generates an RF excitation signal which is transmitted to the RFID device.
