    • Disclosed is a method and apparatus for controlling multistage systems where the relative capacities (process gains) of each stage are known. The method uses a split-range control concept in order to control multiple stages with a single feedback controller, such as PID. Stage combinations are generated automatically and sequenced to provide contiguous control and optimum control resolution across the overall range of the multistage system. The control method incorporates hysteretic deadzones to improve robustness around stage transition points. The assumption of a tuned PI feedback controller allows the size of the deadzone to be related to general control performance requirements applicable across classes of similar systems. A simulated HVAC&R system is used to evaluate the method and it is compared an alternative approach.

    • A system and method for supporting bandwidth requests in a handover are provided. A method for mobile station operations includes transmitting a first message, receiving a second message responsive to the first message, and initiating a handover with the target controller and a serving controller. The first message includes an incremental bandwidth request, the second message includes an indicator indicating that a target controller has allocated resources at least equal to a total bandwidth required by the mobile station, and the total bandwidth required by the mobile station is provided by a serving controller or maintained by the target controller.

    • A motor-operated selector valve relating to refrigerating technology is provided. In the present invention, a slider is controlled by a stepper motor so as to be rotatablely displaced among four positions on a flat bottom surface of a valve seat. Three outlets on the flat bottom surface are communicated with a normal open inlet in the valve seat via flow-guiding orifices in the slider respectively. In the first working position, the first outlet and the third outlet are in communication with the normal open inlet at the same time; in the second working position, the second outlet is in communication with the normal open inlet; in the third working position, the third outlet is in communication with the normal open inlet; in the fourth working position, the first outlet is in communication with the normal open inlet.

    • A system for shielding personnel and/or equipment from radiation particles. In one embodiment, a first substrate is connected to a first array or perpendicularly oriented metal-like fingers, and a second, electrically conducting substrate has an array of carbon nanostructure (CNS) fingers, coated with an electro-active polymer extending toward, but spaced apart from, the first substrate fingers. An electric current and electric charge discharge and dissipation system, connected to the second substrate, receives a current and/or voltage pulse initially generated when the first substrate receives incident radiation. In another embodiment, an array of CNSs is immersed in a first layer of hydrogen-rich polymers and in a second layer of metal-like material. In another embodiment, a one- or two-dimensional assembly of fibers containing CNSs embedded in a metal-like matrix serves as a radiation-protective fabric or body covering.
