    • Described is a computer system which can be pre-set over a network to boot to a first or second remote boot protocol prior to being powered on over the network. The system is coupled to a remote computer via a data communication link. The system includes a communication subsystem for communicating data with the computer system. The communication subsystem is supplied with auxiliary power and is operative to communicate with the computer system regardless of whether the computer system is in a normal operating state. The remote computer includes a program for sending a first packet to the computer system via the communication link. The first packet contains a boot parameter which is indicative of the first or second remote boot protocol. The computer system is operative to receive the first packet via the communication subsystem and store the boot parameter in a memory thereof without powering on. The memory is accessed by BIOS during a network boot sequence and the system will boot in accordance with the specified boot protocol stored in the memory.

    • Methods, apparatus, and computer program products are disclosed for optimizing communications throughput in a wireless networking environment that supports a plurality of communications channel topologies that include identifying a plurality of clients having wireless network adapters supporting disparate channel bandwidths in the wireless networking environment, and periodically switching from one communications channel topology to another communications channel topology in dependence upon the supported channel bandwidths of the adapters of the identified clients. Optimizing communications throughput in a wireless networking environment that supports a plurality of communications channel topologies may also include identifying the supported channel bandwidths, quantifying current data traffic through each supported channel bandwidth, and switching from one communications channel topology that includes one supported channel bandwidth to another communications channel topology that includes another supported channel bandwidth at a time period dependent upon the quantified current data traffic.

    • A computer system is disclosed that includes a primary processor and a service processor operable regardless of a power state of the computer system. A non-volatile memory device is communicatively coupled to the primary processor and the service processor. The non-volatile memory device stores firmware which includes a first list of patches required for installation on the computer system and a second list of patches previously installed on the computer system. A comparator module is provided to determine whether there are patches included in the first list that are not included in second list. A boot module is provided to boot a maintenance operating system in the event the first list includes patches not included in the second list. The maintenance operating system is configured to install, on the computer system, patches included in the first list but not the second list.
