    • Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate notifying and detecting modification of system information in a wireless communication system. A mobile device may receive a first system information block (SIB) in a first time period, obtain from the first SIB at least one parameter related to modification of at least one SIB, and determine whether to receive the at least one SIB based on the at least one parameter obtained from the first SIB. The mobile device may receive a paging message in a second time period and may determine whether to receive one or more SIBs based on information obtained from the paging message. The mobile device may receive the first SIB in the first time period after entering a cell in an idle mode. The mobile device may receive the paging message in the second time period after accessing the cell.

    • In some embodiments, an access terminal is configured to select a first set of system resources, and communicate a message to acquire access to the first set of system resources, wherein the message conceals that the access terminal is capable of communication with a second set of system resources. In one embodiment, the first set of system resources includes circuit-switched system resources, the second set of system resources includes packet-switched system resources, and an access terminal conceals from the network that it is operable using the packet-switched system resources in order to acquire and/or maintain connected mode access to the circuit-switched system resources. Such embodiments allow an access terminal to use circuit-switched system resources even if the network does not support CS fallback or has refused a CS fallback request.

    • Systems and methodologies are described that handle security activation during handover in a wireless network. A new access stratum (AS) key can be provided to a serving access point (and a related wireless device) before and/or while preparing a target access point during an inter-cell handover. The serving access point can receive the new AS key and provide it to the target access point as part of handover preparation. The serving access point can then initiate inter-cell handover of the related wireless device indicating that the wireless device can utilize a new AS key before the serving access point has an opportunity to activate the new AS key with the wireless device. The wireless device can subsequently perform a random access procedure to the target access point and/or establish a connection therewith by transmitting other messages using the new AS key.

    • Handling of integrity check failure in a wireless communication system can safely send the mobile station to the idle mode upon detection of security failure. Alternatively or in addition, attempts to recover from the security failure situation can be enabled without forcing the mobile station to enter idle mode. The mobile station autonomously transitions to idle mode when the integrity check failure is detected a certain threshold number ‘X’ times during a specified period ‘Y’. Whereupon, the mobile station initiates the Radio Resource Control (RRC) connection re-establishment procedure after integrity check failure is detected. In the RRC connection re-establishment procedure, the security parameters are re-initialized to provide a possibility to recover from the failure situation.
