    • A method and system for generating an application for a client node is disclosed. Identification data is received from the client node and stored. A unique identifier is associated with the stored data and stored with a link to the stored data. An application is generated for the client node which included the unique identifier embedded in the application. The application is arranged to present the unique identifier to a remote authentication system during execution. The client node is identified in dependence on the stored data upon presentation of the unique identifier to the remote authentication system by the client node.

    • A method and apparatus that ensures that requests for pages in a particular domain name are routed to the same proxy server by all of a plurality of clients. If, for example, a proxy server has a persistent connection to a server for a domain, all incoming requests for that domain will be sent to the proxy server and will, thus, will be able to take advantage of the persistent connection. Each client contains a proxy table that is periodically updated by one or more of the proxy servers. A proxy table in a client contains an entry corresponding to each proxy server. When a client needs to access a resource through a proxy server, the client truncates the address (e.g., the URL) of the resource. Thus, for example, all addresses in a particular domain name are truncated to the same value. The truncated address is then used to hash into the proxy table in the client and to identify a proxy server. The client sends its request to the identified proxy server. Thus, all requests for a particular domain hash to the same proxy table entry and, hence, to the same proxy server. If the proxy server has opened a persistent connection to the server for the requested domain, the proxy server will be able to take advantage of the persistent connection.

    • A routing engine for a node controller of a switch or for a router provides enhanced routing for unicast and multicast connections by representing preferred routing trees, associated with different bandwidths and quality of service indications, as tables having, for each entry, a node identification, a parent node identification, a link identifier and ah effective distance by which a node identified by the node identification is separated from the controller or router. The routing engine adapts quickly to changes in network configurations, such as link failure, by quickly patching a table affected by the failure in order to maintain service until a new preferred routing tree can be calculated. Recalculations of preferred routing trees are avoided by using said table to determine whether a new link or a restored link could possibly provide a more cost effective route than that specified in the existing table.

    • A client is given control over the pre-fetching of resources. The client may be, for example, resident on an electronic device such as a computer system that caches resources. The resources may be, for instance, web pages. Identifying property values that are intrinsically tied to the contents of the resources are used to determine whether resources are already resident within the cache prior to pre-fetching the resources. In addition, the client may request information regarding a resource to assist the client in determining whether to pre-fetch the resource. Such information may include the size of the resource and other information.
