摘要： A lookup unit matrix combines a plurality of lookup units to provide a longest prefix match for a search key longer than the lookup unit's mapper key. A portion of the search key is provided to each of the plurality of lookup units in a single search request issued to the lookup unit matrix. Each lookup unit in the lookup unit matrix performs a multi-level search for the result value based on the portion of the search key forwarded as the mapper key and the result of a multilevel search in the previous lookup unit. The search results in a value corresponding to the search key stored in a single location in one of the lookup units.

摘要： A memory is successively searched using the contents of a header included in a data packet in order to select a forwarding entry for the data packet. The searches use a header field for a different protocol layer. A next field stored in a forwarding entry is used to determine if another search is required. The data packet is forwarded according to the forwarding override stored in the selected forwarding entry selected from the final successive search. The received data packet is forwarded to a host processor, through the switch, to both the host processor and through the switch, or the received data packet is not forwarded, dependent on the selected forward override.

摘要： A method and apparatus is provided for translating an L-bit put signal to a W-bit output signal such as a virtual network identification signal to an internal virtual network signal. The translation is performed using a multi-stage lookup. The input signal is portioned into a plurality of subsets of bits. A first index to a first stage is provided by combining a portion of bits and a first delta subset of bits. A second index to a second stage is provided by combining data stored at the first index in the first stage and the a second delta subset of bits. The corresponding output signal is stored at the last index in the last stage. The use of the multi-stage lookup instead of a single-stage lookup reduces the memory required to perform the translation.

The switch includes a plurality of output ports each having an associated output port register, and a port memory controller for receiving a bit map on the enqueue of a cell into the switch. The bit map includes a bit for each output port register. The port memory controller writes to each output port register the bit from the bit map for that port register. The value of a bit in an output port register indicates whether a copy of the enqueued cell is to be transmitted from the output port associated with that output port register.
