    • A battery-powered portable radio conserves battery power while the radio monitors messages transmitted over a radio channel, e.g., a radio control channel, Message processing circuitry processes a detected message and stores that message in memory. Before processing a subsequently detected message, the subsequent message is compared with the stored message. It they do not match, the subsequently detected message is subjected to further processing including voting, matching, validity, checking, etc. However, if they match, the subsequent message is ignored as a redundant message and a power savings mode is entered to conserve battery power.

    • These and other objects of the present invention are achieved using an Adaptive Multi-Path Filter (AMPF) which eliminates audibly objectionable click noise generated at the output of an FM discriminator to prevent audible distortion or other corruption of the desired signal which may include voice and low speed digital data. Clicks are detected at the discriminator output using a colored-noise, matched filter designed and adapted to the click signature/shape as well as to the desired signal characteristics. The colored-noise matched, filter output is then compared to an adaptive threshold. When the threshold is exceeded, a click is registered as detected. Click duration is then estimated. An estimate of the desired signal is generated and that replaces the originally received data signal estimate within the click duration region. Using characteristics of the desired signal just before and after the detected click noise, the adaptive filter accurately estimates the parameters of the desired signal so that the replacement signal fairly models what the desired signal would have looked like had the click not occurred. In this way, a substantial portion of the desired signal is preserved.

    • Characteristics of a communication channel are used to establish key sequences for use in encrypting communicated information. In one embodiment, these characteristics are the impedances of the channel viewed from one transceiver to the other and vice versa. The keys can be established with computations equivalent to a bounded distance decoding procedure, and the decoder used to establish a key may be used for processing the subsequent data transmission. Compared to classical and public-key cryptographic systems, an alternative mechanism for establishing and sharing key sequences that depends on a physical process is provided in which each party need not generate a pseudo-random quantity because the necessary randomness is provided by the properties of the communication channel itself. By using a channel decoder, the probability of two users establishing the same secret key is substantially unity, and the probability of an eavesdropper establishing the same key is substantially zero. Also, the number of possible keys is large enough that finding the correct one by exhaustive search is impractical.

    • Methods and apparatus for preventing tampering with memory in an electronic device, such as a cellular telephone, are disclosed. An electronic device having a memory and a processing means contains logic that is used to perform a one-way hash calculation on the device's memory contents whereby an audit hash value, or signature, of such contents is derived. The audit hash value is compared to a an authenticated valid hash value derived from authentic memory contents. A difference between the audit and valid hash values can be indicative of memory tampering. In accordance with another aspect of the invention, electronic device memory contents can be updated by a data transfer device that is authenticated before being permitted access to the memory contents. Data transfer device authentication involves the use of a public/private key encryption scheme. When the data transfer device interfaces with a electronic device and requests memory access, a process to authenticate the data transfer device is initiated.

    • Functional definitions and data transmission protocols are provided for both downstream and upstream OAM data flows in an ATM-based point-to-multipoint broadband access network ("BAN"), such as a passive optical network ("PON"). In particular, B-ISDN OAM functions are defined from an "OAM flow" perspective, wherein some of the PON physical layer related functions are performed at the F1 level flow, including all functions relating to the sign-on, ranging, power tuning, synchronization and timing status of the ONUs. F3 flow level functions are defined to include further performance and fault management functions, as well as MAC related functions, concerning mainly upstream and for upstream bandwidth management transactions between the headend facility and the respective ONUs. The F1 and F3 OAM data flows are transported in respective downstream frames and upstream packets in preferred protocols suitable for a point-to-multipoint network configuration. In particular, downstream F1 OAM flows are carried in specifically allocated overhead of each downstream frame header, with a downstream F1 "flow unit" defined as the entire frame. Downstream F3 OAM flows may be alternately carried in either the framing overhead, or in overhead associated with specific downstream ATM slots, with a downstream F3 flow unit defined as the respective ATM slots. Upstream F1 and F3 data flows are carried in specifically allocated overhead associated with each upstream packet.
