    • A gas meter using optical communication. The meter includes a shaft that is rotated by a flow of gas, a first sensor for sensing a first rotational angle of the shaft, a second sensor for sensing a second rotational angle of the shaft, a first light source operated by the first sensor for issuing a first light signal, and a second light source operated by the second sensor for issuing a second light signal. One or more fiber optic cables carries the light signals to an external meter interface having an optical receiver. A rotation of the shaft is recognizable by the external receiver when first one then the other of the light signals is detected.

    • A fiber optic signal collection system and method for position sensing or sensing other parameters indicated by light distinctive patterns. The system is particularly suitable for use in aircraft flight control. The system includes a set of fiber optic fibers with first and second ends. The first ends are disposed adjacent a light distinctive pattern indicating a particular pattern such as a relative position. A portion of the second ends are positioned adjacent a light source and a portion of the second ends are disposed adjacent a light sensing electrical device such that light from the light source can be conveyed through the fibers, reflected from the light distinctive pattern, and conveyed through the fibers to the light sensing electrical device in order to detect the pattern in the electrical device. By this means the parameter indicated by the light distinctive pattern can be detected, and the right indication of which can be remotely conveyed through the fiber optic fibers to a conveniently located light sensing electrical device. Multiple parameters can be sensed with a single light sensing electrical device by alternate routing of light from different light distinctive patterns indicating different parameters to the light sensing electrical device.

    • A method and device, including a portable embodiment, for the automated inspection of devices having different visual changeable and non-changeable indicia on the faces thereof. Specific devices include meters, particularly electric usage meters, for detection of tampering, for improving efficiency of maintenance procedures and for usage in reading the meters for billing purposes. Meters of various heights, configuration and construction are fixed into designated positions and are inspected by visual computer-linked camera scanning, to determine meter periphery and a location reference point, and imaging of identifying portions of meter faces relative to the determined location reference point. The identifying portions are compared with correlative templates of existing meter types, stored in computer memory. Identification of specific meter type permits exact location and subsequent OCR identification of the specific meter number (with use history) and parameters (voltage, amperage, wire connections etc.) for preparation of an operability-inspection station. Meter dial needle positions are read by light scanning of respective determined dial positions, and imaging of connected dark pixels, indicating needle location. A slope determination fixes the reading of the dial, which is used for billing purposes. Adjacent dial needles are in a predetermined relative position with deviations therefrom indicating tampering. Numeral meter readings are OCR scanned for billing purposes.

    • The invention provides an inexpensive and electrically isolated remote monitoring apparatus for monitoring the operational status of any oxygen concentrator by specifically monitoring the standard set of high and low pressure diagnostic light emitting diodes provided with most concentrators. Flexible boots enclose the respective optodetectors and are forceably pushed over the diagnostic diodes of the oxygen concentrator so that any light emitted by either diode is detected by the respective optodetector. The optodetectors are further connected to a microcontroller. A telephone line interface port connects to the microcontroller and provides for a telephonic communication link between the microcontroller and a remote computer. When a malfunction is detected and analyzed by the microcontroller, both the type of malfunction and a location code is transmitted to the remote computer.

    • A system for the remote reading of a gas meter includes an interface unit within a domestic residence but situated such that an input/output terminal for the interface unit is accessable from the exterior of the residence, and a hand-held meter reading unit for connection to the terminal in order to read and record the value of the gas consumption indicated by the meter. The meter reading unit has two LED sources, whose outputs are combined a Y-coupler, for passage into the interface unit when an optical fibre is connected thereto. At a multiplexer, the combined beam is dispersed according to wavelength and separately passes along a fibre array to respective roller digits of the tumbler for reflection or not according to the displayed reading. Reflected light passes back through the system, is divided at a Y-coupler and passes to a de-multiplexer such that the light returning in respect of the roller digits can be measured and displayed at a light detector and liquid crystal display.
