    • A hydrostatic variator having a common yoke design and two or more bent axis piston drive units is disclosed in which the rotating group of a drive unit is arranged to be movable relative to the yoke to alter the angle between its drive shaft axis and rotating group axis independent of the other drive unit. This can be accomplished using movable sector plates coupled to the rotating groups that are arcuately movable within the yoke about the axis perpendicular to the respective drive shaft axes of the drive units. Such variators enjoy the response and packaging advantages of a common yoke design while still allowing dynamic adjustment of system size. In turn, varying system size allows for efficiency to be improved at conditions other than at the maximum design torque.

    • A hydraulic transmission has a pump and a hydraulic motor which are in communication with each other through a fluid passage and each of which has an eccentric or inclined movable member that is moved to vary the volume of liquid discharged by the pump or motor, the pump receiving an input rotation that is developed from the motor as an output rotation of a varied rotational frequency. The hydraulic transmission further includes a first element for urging the movable member of the pump in a first direction, a second element for urging the movable member of the motor in a second direction; and an actuating mechanism which moves the movable member of the pump a distance proportional to a control input, and which, when the displacement of the pump is varied, retains the movable member of the motor to keep the displacement of the motor constant, and which, when the movable member of the pump is retained at a certain position, moves the movable member of the motor a distance proportional to the control input.

    • A hydromechanical power transmission system is disclosed, including a positive-displacement variable-speed piston-type hydrostatic power transmission driven by an input shaft and a coordinating planetary gear train connected to an output shaft. The hydrostatic transmission is made up of a variabledisplacement unit connected to the input shaft and usually acting as a pump and a constant-displacement unit positioned in series with the variable-displacement unit and usually acting as a hydraulic motor. A portion of the power input is transmitted to the output shaft through the hydrostatic transmission and the remaining portion is transmitted by the planetary gear train as a mechanical transmission unit so that the power transmission efficiency is higher than that attained in the conventional hydrostatic power transmission which is void of such mechanical transmission unit. A typical application of such transmission system is an automotive vehicle.
