    • A chuck for fixing a rotary tool such a drill and an end mill to a machine tool is disclosed. This chuck comprises a main body comprising a taper shank for fixing the chuck to the machine tool and a tool support for clamping the rotary tool, a fastening ring for regulating fastening force by the tool support, a needle roller bearing interposed between the fastening ring and the tool support under an inclined state, and a gear mechanism for rotating the fastening ring. This gear mechanism comprises, for example, a worm wheel formed integrally with the fastening ring and a worm engaging with the worm wheel. When this structure is employed, the rotary tool can be fitted to and removed from the chuck without fixing a spindle of the machine tool, and the fastening ring can be turned without a great force.

    • There is disclosed a chuck adapted to be attached to the spindle of a machine tool, for gripping an intended tool, comprising a chuck barrel adapted to grip an intended tool and having a conical outer peripheral surface and not having slots extending along the generating lines thereof, a clamp ring fitted over said chuck barrel, and a number of rollable bodies in the form of needle rollers interposed between said clamp ring and said chuck barrel and inclined at a fixed angle with respect to the generating lines, the arrangement being such that when said clamp ring is manipulated for rotation, said rollable bodies spirally revolve around the axis of the chuck barrel along the conical peripheral surface thereof while rotating around their own axes, thereby effecting the contraction and configurational restoration of the chuck barrel, said chuck being characterized in that a restraining ring is attached to the outer peripheral surface of said clamp ring and rollable bodies, particularly in the form of needle rollers, are interposed between said restraining ring and said clamp ring, thereby restraining said chuck barrel from developing a flection deformation when said chuck barrel is contracted and restraining said clamp ring from developing a restoration deformation as it tends to radially expand by the reaction due to the contracting force, thereby increasing the power for gripping the tool.

    • A keyless chuck adapted to grip an object, such as a drill bit, is disclosed. The keyless chuck includes a cylindrical body provided with an axially extending tapered bore. The surface of the tapered bore includes first and second cam surfaces. A control sleeve is provided surrounding at least a portion of the cylindrical body and is adapted for controlled axial movement relative to the cylindrical body. A retaining element is attached to the control sleeve and partially closes one end of the cylindrical body. A thrust bearing is provided in the retaining element. Gripping elements are positioned within the tapered bore and are adapted to engage and grip the tool when the tool is inserted between the gripping elements. A thrust bearing is positioned in the retaining element which operatively engages the gripping elements. A spring retains the gripping elements in contact with the tapered bore and also with the thrust bearing wherein, upon axial movement of the control sleeve relative to the cylindrical body, the gripping elements move axially within the tapered bore in contact with the first cam means, thereby causing radial movement of the gripping elements and wherein, upon rotation of the cylindrical body relative to the gripping elements, the gripping elements shift along the surface of the second cam and thereby also cause radial movement of the gripping elements.
