    • In a circuit that turns off a fluorescent lamp, clamping circuitry is provided to dissipate energy stored in a ballast when the lamp is being turned off. In a normal state in which the lamp is on, or in a normal state in which the lamp is off, clamping is not performed as long the VDS of a power switch is below a voltage A. In a lamp turn off operation, the switch is turned on for a time period to extinguish the lamp, and is then made to operate as a clamp (operate in its linear region) for a second period of time to dissipate energy that was stored in the ballast. Clamping in the linear region continues for VDS voltages down to B as ballast energy is dissipated, where B is smaller than A. By clamping down to the lower voltage B, re-ignition of the lamp is prevented.

    • A lamp ignition circuit is provided which can initiate operation of a gas discharge lamp using a driving voltage which is similar in magnitude to the lamp operating voltage. The lamp ignition circuit is useful with a semi-resonant ballast and lamp circuit in which switching operations intrinsic to the lamp shock-excite a series-connected inductor and capacitor into semi-resonant operation corresponding to an energy exchange and transfer during each half-cycle of the alternating current source to drive the lamp to start and maintain operation of the lamp using line voltage. The ignitor circuit has a disabling function following ignition of the lamp which is operable when the operating voltage of the lamp is approximately the line voltage of the power source. The disabling function triggered by an increase in voltage across the ignition circuit following operation of the lamp.

    • A combination electronic ballast designed to operate a metal halide lamp and a high-pressure sodium gas discharge lamp is disclosed. The ballast includes a primary and secondary coil coupled to a magnetic core. The primary is adapted to be connected to an ac power source and the secondary is adapted to be connected to a metal halide lamp and a high-pressure sodium lamp. The primary and secondary coils are connected together using a capacitance circuit including two capacitors and a switch. The capacitance circuit is designed to connect both of the capacitors between the primary and secondary coil when a high pressure sodium lamp is connected to the ballast and to connect only one of the capacitors in parallel when a metal halide lamp is connected to the ballast. In an alternative embodiment, the primary is adapted to be connected to one of four different ac power sources.

    • A constant wattage electronic ballast circuit for lamp comprises a circuit for producing a voltage feedback signal substantially proportional to voltage of the lamp. A diode function generator processes the voltage feedback signal so as to produce a processed signal which, within sequential bands of lamp voltage, varies less for a specified variation of lamp voltage in a higher voltage band than in a lower voltage band. A circuit produces a current feedback signal substantially proportional to current in the lamp. A circuit for controlling lamp current comprises a circuit for summing the processed signal with the current feedback signal to create a summed signal, and a circuit for adjusting lamp current in response to the difference between the summed signal and a reference signal.
