    • A belt is rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow F by a motor to cause first and second feed roller pairs to feed a stimulable phosphor sheet in the direction indicated by the arrow X2. Before the stimulable phosphor sheet is scanned by a light beam, the belt is rotated a predetermined length in the direction indicated by the arrow E by the motor. Thereafter, the belt is rotated to cause the first and second feed roller pairs to feed the stimulable phosphor sheet in the auxiliary scanning direction indicated by the arrow X1. When the stimulable phosphor sheet is scanned by a light beam, the belt is stably held in a desired position on the driven pulley, but is not slid sideways, allowing the stimulable phosphor sheet to be fed highly accurately in the auxiliary scanning direction.

    • An image scanner utilizes an area CRT while avoiding the low linear resolution limitations of such a device. The CRT is coupled to a noncoherent fiber optic bundle (area array) having a proximal end of a geometry to optically match the scanned area of the face plate. The remote end of the fiber array is linear and coupled to a scan segment of a page to be scanned. The beam of the CRT is directed to the consecutive fibers of the bundle in a sequence imposed by a look-up table containing digital addresses and digital to analog converters to produce the required x-y deflection voltages. Since there need only be 5100 fibers for a 600 line per inch scanner and the spot resolution of the CRT need only be in excess of 5100 positions, the resolution is easily obtained. For example, 5100 spots implies a linear resolution of 72 elements in a scan line. The decay time of the phosphor is chosen to be short enough that only one fiber is illuminated at any instant. A single output photodetector is used for monochrome and a three output photodetector is used for color.

    • A multiple resolution scanner device for scanning an object may comprise a first optical wave guide bundle having a light input end, a light output end, and a first reduction ratio associated therewith. The light input end of the first optical wave guide bundle is arranged to receive image light from the object being scanned. A second optical wave guide bundle having a light input end and a light output end has a second reduction ratio associated therewith that is different than the first reduction ratio associated with the first optical wave guide bundle. The light input end of the second optical wave guide bundle is arranged to receive image light from the object being scanned. A detector positioned adjacent the light output ends of the first and second optical wave guide bundles receives image light from the light output ends and produces an image data signal related to image light received from the light output ends. An optical wave guide selection apparatus operatively associated with the scanner device selects an optical wave guide bundle, the image light from which is used by the detector to produce the image data signal.

    • A media spacing system for a fiber optic CRT printer. The system has a film coating over the fiber optic portion of the CRT, outside the phosphor display area, which keeps the media a fixed distance from the display area to provide for a uniform display of data on the media. The film may be applied in multiple layers, with each successive layer having a larger size, to create a rounded edge for the coating. A pressure plate is placed on the opposite side of the media from the film coating to keep the media firmly against the film coating. A compliant element, such as foam rubber, attaches the pressure plate to a fixed bracket to allow the pressure plate to adjust for bow and twist of the CRT, while maintaining pressure against the media.
