    • A submersible pump employs a sealed, oil-filled chamber with a moisture-sensing probe to detect the presence of any pumpage, such as water, which has leaked into the chamber. If contamination is detected, the pump may be shut down for repairs before it fails. Two mechanical seals are installed the lower seal is located between the pump and the oil chamber and an upper seal is located between the oil chamber and the motor. The improvement disclosed herein combines a pressurized oil accumulator with the pump oil chamber described above. The accumulator is divided into two compartments separated by a bladder, one compartment being connected to the reservoir of the pump and filled with oil for providing make-up oil to the reservoir and for accepting surplus (expansion) oil from the reservoir. The second compartment is pressurized and applies pressure to the bladder that, in turn, transfers the pressure to the oil in the first compartment and to the oil-filled chamber. The purpose is to pressurize the pump oil chamber in order to equalize pressure across the seals and thereby prevent failure of the seals or, at least, extend their life. The invention also includes apparatus for purging the motor casing with air and a pressure transducer for detecting a decrease in reservoir oil pressure.

    • A submersible seal that operates in a substantially frictionless manner is provided for protecting a motor from liquid intrusion along the shaft. Motors of this type are commonly used, for example, in aerators, pumps, mixers, flow developers, and the like. The submersible seal of the present invention includes a stationary seal element and a rotating seal element. The stationary seal element is in the form of a tubular section which is attached to the motor casing, surrounding but spaced from the rotating shaft. The rotating seal element, is a cylindrical section which is attached to the rotatable shaft and inter-engages the stationary seal element to form a labyrinth passageway having a first end at the casing of the motor, a second end opposite the first end, and at least one reverse bend therebetween. Liquid from the body of liquid in which the motor is immersed attempts to enter the first end of the labyrinth passage, and in so doing compresses an air cushion in the labyrinth passage. The geometry is such that the air cushion occupies the reverse bend, and serves as a liquid seal to prevent ingress of liquid.

    • A molten metal pump includes an impeller disposed at the end of an elongate drive shaft. The drive shaft is disposed within an elongate, hollow post. The impeller and the end of the post are adapted to be immersed in molten metal. An inert gas is conveyed through the gap between the outer surface of the drive shaft and the inner surface of the post, which gas is discharged into the molten metal in the vicinity of the impeller. Because the drive shaft is insulated from the molten metal, it can be made of a durable material such as steel; because the post is stationary relative to the molten metal, the metal is stirred only by the impeller, and not by the drive shaft. The invention includes other features such as a quick disconnect capability and a radial adjustment capability.

    • All of the components of a sump pump apparatus necessary to be in the sump are enclosed in a common case. In one embodiment, this case is of plastic and holds the motor means, the pump impeller and at least part of the water level sensors. The motor means is in a bell holding trapped air so that the water cannot reach the motor means. In one such embodiment the motor means is a single D.C. motor and in another embodiment it consists of a D.C. motor coupled by a one-way clutch to an A.C. motor which in turn is connected to the pump impeller. In each of these two embodiments, the water level sensor includes a tube having an open end in the bell to sample the air pressure in the bell and an end externally of the sump connected to a pressure actuated switch which turns on the motor means at a particular air pressure above ambient. Also within the bell is a float operated switch serving as a back-up to the air actuated switch. Using two motors, as mentioned above, the A.C. motor is turned on by an air pressure actuator at a lower air pressure above ambient than is the D.C. motor.In another embodiment the case is cylindrical and elongated in the direction of its axis. The lower end of the case extends into the sump while the upper end stands above the sump. On the upper end are two motors, two pumps and the related controls. The intake lines for the pump extend down within the case into the sump, as do air pressure sampling tubes. One motor is turned on by a pressure actuated switch at a relatively low pressure above ambient while the other motor is turned on by a pressure actuated switch at a comparatively higher pressure over ambient.

    • Submersible electric motors, i.e., those which operate in water or brine wells, are protected against the entry of the well liquid which may contain foreign matter by being submersed in a neutral liquid, such as refined oil. Apparatus is provided which includes a float to sense the interface between the oil inside the electric motor and the well fluid outside the motor, which float and a cooperating valve and an auxiliary oil pump provides a regulated flow of oil to maintain the interface of the oil and well fluid at a fixed location. The intrusion of motor damaging well fluid into the motor is prevented.
