    • Apparatus for winding a material web includes one of a spool and a reel. A carrier drum forms a winding nip with the spool or the reel. The material web is guided over the carrier drum. Primary arms guide the spool or the reel when the spool or the reel is in a primary winding phase. Pressing levers are arranged on the primary arms. The pressing levers are structured and arranged to press the spool or the reel onto the carrier drum. Secondary arms are structured and arranged to press the spool or the reel onto the carrier drum when the spool or the reel is in a secondary winding phase. The carrier drum is mounted axially between the primary arms.     • Method for winding a material web onto a reel in an apparatus that includes a rotatable feed roll, a carrying drum, a discharge roll and a pulper. Winding device for winding a material web onto a reel, said winding device including: a feed roll, a carrying drum, and a support belt which is adapted to guide the material web over the feed roll and the carrying drum. An external vacuum device is positioned adjacent a circumferential surface of the carrying drum which is not contacted by the support belt and the material web and a winding nip is formed between the carrying drum and the reel. A discharge roll is provided for guiding the support belt, and the discharge roll is located in the vicinity of a pulper, downstream from the carrying drum, relative to a web run direction. The discharge roll is also adapted to divert at least a portion of the material web to the pulper before feeding the material web to the reel. The carrying drum may include at least one of circumferential ridges and perforations, and the support belt is one of a perforated and an air permeable belt. Preferably, the carrying drum includes a perforated jacket.

    • A reel-up in a paper machine has two primary arms, each of which has an elongate beam that is pivotably journalled on stand members in the reel-up, and a carriage that is displaceably journalled on the beam and has a gripper on its side that faces the surface winding drum for gripping a reeling drum collected from a top drum stock. Each beam has a free end located at a lesser distance from the pivot axis of the primary arm than the distance between the pivot axis and the empty reeling drum located in the drum stock. Each carriage can be displaced outwards from the beam so that the gripper is beyond the free end of the beam at a distance from the free end so as to assume a position for receipt of a reeling drum. One of the carriages carries a central drive device with a coupling device for axial movement into operating engagement with a coupling device on one end of the reeling drum, so as to rotate the reeling drum and bring its peripheral speed up to the speed of the traveling paper web while the primary arms are lowering the reeling drum to engage it with the surface winding drum of the reel-up.

    • A center wind assist mechanism is provided for use in a web winding device for winding a substantially continuous web onto a reel bar rotating about its center axis. The winding device incudes a driving drum that maintains a first nip engagement with the reel bar to rotate the reel bar and transfer the web passing over a surface of the driving drum onto the reel bar. The winding device also includes a secondary arm for engaging the reel bar to maintain the reel bar in nip driving engagement with the driving drum. The center wind assist mechanism comprises a drive assist support arm mounted to the secondary arm to move therewith. The center wind assist mechanism also includes a driving wheel rotatably connected to one end of the drive assist support arm. The center wind assist mechanism further includes tensioning apparatus, a center assist drive and transmission. The tensioning apparatus is connected to the drive assist support arm to maintain the driving wheel in driving and torque transfer relation with a peripheral surface portion of the reel bar which peripheral surface portion is off center to the center axis of the reel bar between the center axis and the driving drum. The center assist drive rotatably drives through a transmission the driving wheel. The use of the center assist drive mechanism insures that a driving assist is provided by the driving wheel. Further, the location of the driving wheel in the off center location does not add to the nip pressure being applied by the secondary arm which could adversely effect the web being wound onto the reel bar.
