    • A contour compensating circuit is disclosed for compensating a video signal in such a manner as to obtain contour portions which are not overly stressed. The compensating operation of the contour compensating circuit according to this invention is performed by obtaining a full-wave rectified signal of the primary differentiated signal of a video signal and the positive- and negative-phase signals of a secondary differentiated signal thereof and forming a secondary pseudo-differentiated signal with a narrow pre and post overshooting width range from the signals obtained by selecting a first higher level signal between the full-wave rectified signal and one of the positive-phase signal and the half-wave signal thereof identical in porality with the full-wave signal, selecting a second higher level signal between the full-wave rectified signal and one of the negative-phase signal and the half-wave signal thereof identical in porality with the full-wave signal and comparing the first and second higher level signals, half-wave signal and the full-wave rectified signal. The resulting signal is superposed on the video signal.

    • A gradation attributes correcting device to correct gradation attributes of an input image signal includes a brightness gradation correcting unit to correct gradation attributes with respect to brightness of an image indicated by the input image signal. The brightness gradation correcting unit includes a characteristic information acquisition unit, a correction information decision unit, and a brightness gradation processing unit. The characteristic information acquisition unit acquires a minimum, average, and maximum brightness, of an image on a frame from the input image signal. The correction information decision unit determines correction information to correct the gradation attributes with respect to brightness according to combinations of the acquired minimum, average and maximum brightness of the image on the frame. The brightness gradation correction processing unit establishes a polynomial function for the image on the frame based on the correction information to correct the gradation attributes by arithmetic operation using the polynomial function.

    • A black level correction circuit includes an extraction circuit for extracting a black signal from a video signal as a signal whose level is lower than a reference level, and a black level expanding circuit for expanding in level of the black signal for that peak level of the black signal equals a normal black level. The circuit further includes a level adjusting circuit which adjusts the reference level for extracting the black signal on the basis of at least one of an average value of a luminance signal portion the video signal, and a beam current value of a cathode-ray tube to which the video signal is supplied. With the variable reference level, contrast is improved for pictures having high luminance levels or low luminance levels on the whole.

    • In a video signal processing device, a black-white expansion circuit performs black-white expansion of a luminance signal (Y signal) included in a video signal to generate an expanded luminance signal (Y′ signal). A luminance ratio ‘n’ is computed as the rate of the expanded luminance signal (Y′ signal) to the luminance signal (Y signal). A first color difference signal (U signal) and a second color difference signal (V signal) included in the video signal are respectively multiplied by the luminance ratio ‘n’ (=Y′/Y) to give an expanded first color difference signal (U′ signal) and an expanded second color difference signal (V′ signal). This arrangement of the invention effectively enables black-white expansion with no color change, while attaining reduction of the overall circuit scale.
