    • A method for attenuating pump noise in a wellbore drilling telemetry system includes spectrally analyzing measurements of a parameter related to operation of a pump used to move drilling fluid through the drilling system. Synthetic spectra of the parameter are generated based on a number of pumps in the pump system and a selected number of harmonic frequencies for each pump. Which of the synthetic spectra most closely matches the spectrally analyzed parameter output is determined. The most closely matching synthetic spectrum is used to reduce noise in a signal detected proximate the Earth's surface transmitted from a part of the drilling system disposed in a wellbore.

    • Aspects of the inventions generally provide a method and apparatus for coupling a communication sub to a wired drill pipe. In one aspect, a surface of a coupler head is non threaded and configured to provide a retaining force. In another aspect, a coupler head is coupled to a body, and a support mechanism is coupled to the body and configured to secure the coupler head within a receiving end of the wired drill pipe. In another aspect, a method of placing a communication sub involves inserting the communication sub into the receiving end of the wired drill pipe, adjusting the position of the communication sub until an indication of signal communication between the communication sub and the wired drill pipe is observed, and after the indication of signal communication is observed, retaining the communication sub within the receiving end until removal of the communication sub is desired.

    • The invention relates to a method of correlating two or more overlapping well logs generated by a well logging device which, in use, is positioned in a well and is mounted to an elongate member extending along the well to the surface, movement of the elongate member at the surface controlling movement of the logging device along the well. The method comprises: (a) receiving sets of logging data for two or more spatially overlapping logs generated by the logging device, each set comprising measures of a characteristic of the well at longitudinally spaced positions along the well; (b) receiving measurement data for the period or periods of log generation, the measurement data comprising measurements of the load on the elongate member and measurements of the surface position of the elongate member; and (c) correlating optimising a the sets of logging data by determining an elongate member compliance which corrects the positions of the measured well characteristics. The corrections in step (c) are performed on the basis of a correction function which relates the position of the logging device to at least (i) the measured load on the elongate member, (ii) the measured surface position of the elongate member, and (iii) the compliance of the elongate member.

    • A method of downlinking to a downhole tool located in a borehole is provided. The downhole tool detects transitions in the flow velocity of fluid circulating in the borehole at the downhole tool. To provide for the detection of the transitions fluid is pumped into the drillstring so that it circulates in the borehole at the downhole tool and the the pumping rate of fluid into the drillstring is either increased to a rate which overshoots a steady state pumping rate needed to produce a transition or is decreased to a rate which undershoots a steady state pumping rate needed to produce a transition.
