    • A luminaire for use with HID lightbulbs includes a housing having four primary identical compound curve reflector sections oriented with two sections on each side of the lamp to cause major projections of the light emanating from the luminaire diagonally of the longitudinal axis of the lamp in a horizontal plane to create a square or rectangular distribution of light on the surface to be illuminated.     • An indirect multiple bulb fluorescent light fixture has an elongated rectangular housing with inverted V-shaped reflector members located beneath each of the bulbs and with an additional inverted V-shaped reflector member located between each pair of bulbs in the fixture. All of the interior surfaces of the fixture, including the side walls of the rectangular housing for the fixture, have specular surfaces. The angles of the V-shaped reflector members are selected to cause substantially all of the light emanating from the bulbs to be reflected out of the fixture and to minimize light reflected back into the bulbs for dispersing the light emanating from the fixture uniformly on the ceiling above the fixture without requiring translucent covers or other diffusers. This results in a significantly improved efficiency of the fixture over conventional fixtures which rely upon translucent covers to effect the desired light dispersion.

    • A lighting system for providing aesthetic and energy efficient lighting, for building interiors and exterior lighting, includes lighting fixtures including a high intensity discharge lamp and a novel lens. The lens is formed as a dropped square pyramid with four triangular lower panels and four generally vertical side walls. Prisms on the inner and outer faces of the lens produce a higher luminous intensity at an angle of about 30.degree. to 50.degree. than at nadir and project light at higher angles toward the corners of the lens than perpendicular to the sides of the lens, thereby producing a generally square, widespread light distribution pattern. The lens cuts off high angle light (with respect to nadir), thereby reducing glare.

    • Lighting fixture having housing with an open side. A lamp is mounted in the housing and produces rays which pass through the open side. The housing carries an internal reflecting surface for reflecting light rays from the lamp through the open side. The internal reflecting surface includes Fresnel type portions for reflecting light rays from the lamp at high angles through the open side. In certain applications, the open side would be enclosed by a glass enclosure. In order to increase the efficiency of the lighting fixture, an anti-reflection coating can be provided on both sides of the glass enclosure. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONMany different types of lighting fixtures hereto fore have been provided. However in connection with such lighting fixtures there always is a need for increased reflectivity from the reflective portions of the lighting fixture. In addition, there is a further requirement to obtain better control over the direction of the light emitted from the lighting fixture. Therefore there is a need for a new and improved lighting fixture which is more efficient and one which emits more light rays at high angles.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION AND OBJECTSThe lighting fixture consists of a housing which has an open side. A lamp is mounted in the housing and produces light rays through the open side of the housing. The housing carries an internal reflecting surface for reflecting light rays from the lamp through the open side. The internal reflecting surface includes Fresnel type portions for reflecting light rays at higher angles through the open side. High reflecting coatings are provided on the Fresnel portions to increase the efficiency of the lighting fixture. In certain applications a glass enclosure is provided to cover the open side of the housing. To also increase the efficiency, anti-reflection coatings are provided on both surfaces of the glass enclosure.In general, it is an object of the present invention to provide a lighting fixture in which increased efficiency is obtained by increasing the reflectivity from reflective portions of the lighting fixture.Another object of the invention is to provide a lighting fixture of the above character which is provided with Fresnel type reflecting surfaces for increasing the amount of light which is emitted from the fixture at high angles.Another object of the invention is to provide a lighting fixture of the above character in which it is possible to direct the rays in any desired direction from the light fixture without depending on the overall surface configuration of the reflecting surface.Another object of the invention is to provide a lighting fixture of the above character in which the light emitted at high angles directly from the lamp is increased.Another object of the invention is to provide a lighting fixture of the above character in which it is possible to reduce the profile of the lighting fixture.Another object of the invention is to provide a lighting fixture of the above character which has an increased coefficient of utilization.Additional objects and features of the invention will appear from the following description in which the preferred embodiment are set forth in detail in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

    • A portable traffic signal photometer is capable of rapidly and effectively measuring the intensity of light emanating from a traffic signal light. The photometer includes a housing member with a circular front opening for engagement with the lens of a traffic signal light. The photometer is pressed against the lens, and the light emanating from the traffic signal light is directed through an optical filter located inside the housing, which permits light from the traffic signal light emanating at a predetermined downward angle to pass through it. The light from the filter is directed onto a light-sensitive device, which produces an output signal proportional to the intensity of the light emitted by the traffic signal lens. Additional light-responsive photocells are provided to produce signals indicative of the respective color of the traffic signal light being measured by the photometer, and the composite of the color and the light intensity is used to produce a display which permits the user to determine whether the traffic signal light is properly operating within its designed specifications.
