摘要： Pure spin current devices are provided. The devices include sandwich structures of metal/magnetic insulator/metal. A first current injected in a first metal layer generates a pure spin current. The spin current can be switched between “on” and “off” states by controlling an in-plane magnetization orientation of the magnetic insulator. In the “on” state, the pure spin current is transmitted from the first metal layer to the second metal layer, through the magnetic insulator layer. The pure spin current in the second metal layer induces generation of a second charge current. In the “off” state, the pure spin current is absorbed at the interface between the first metal layer and the metal insulator. Such structures can serve as pure spin current valve devices or provide analog functionality, as rotating the in-plane magnetization provides analog sinusoidal modulation of the spin current.

摘要： A method for heating a fluid in a turbine engine is provided. The method includes channeling an exhaust flow through an exhaust duct of the turbine engine and coupling a panel to the exhaust duct. The panel includes a first wall and an opposite second wall that is spaced a distance from the first wall such that at least one passageway is defined within the panel. The fluid is supplied to the at least one passageway through an inlet defined at a first end of the passageway, such that heat is transferred from the exhaust flow to the fluid flowing through the panel. The fluid is injected into the turbine engine.

摘要： A process for fabricating a carbon composite structure that is lightweight, structurally sound, and characterized by high heat capacity. A carbon structure is devised with cavities therein receiving a phase change medium. The phase change medium demonstrates both high energy absorption capacity and high thermal conductivity and is formed from a carbon fiber to establish a high porosity medium having a large volume fraction. The surface energy of the carbon fibers is enhanced in various ways as by deposition of a carbide former, a metallurgical coating or a precursor liquid or by electroplating or etching the surfaces of the carbon fibers. The enhanced surface energy allows for the retention of phase change material.
