    • A body index apparatus (100) has a measurer for measuring, at plural measurement points, the distance indicating the width of abdomen (11) of a human subject (10) who lies on a reference plane (S) in the supine position. The distances from these measurement points to the reference plane (S) are different from one another. The measurement points are included in a plane (G) intersecting the reference plane (S) and are positioned so that the maximum width of the abdomen (11) in the plane (G) is between a measurement point that is the closest to the reference plane (S) and a measurement point that is the most distant from the reference plane (S). The body index apparatus (100) estimates an obesity index by calculation using the value of the ratio of the first distance to the second distance that is a distance at a predetermined measurement point, the first distance indicating the maximum width of plural distances measured at the plural measurement points.

    • There is provided an abdominal impedance based body composition meter capable of estimating a body composition indicator with high accuracy. The body composition meter measures pressing forces by pressing force measuring means (load detection sections 3a, 3b, 3c and 3d) when measuring abdominal impedances by abdominal impedance measuring means (electrodes 2a, 2b, 2c and 2d) and estimates body composition indicators by body composition estimating means based on the measured pressing forces and the abdominal impedances measured by the abdominal impedance measuring means.

    • A CPU (134) of a body composition measuring apparatus (100) drives a navel position indicator (118) so that it emits light. The height of a frame (114) is adjusted so that a beam of light from navel position indicator (118) irradiates the navel of a human subject. Plural sensors (106) are mounted on the frame (114), and each sensor measures a distance from the sensor to a position to be measured, whereby the abdominal width (X) of the human subject is determined. Subsequently, CPU (134) obtains measured values of weight (W) and bioelectrical impedance (Z). CPU (134) then reads an equation for calculating the visceral fat area and estimates the visceral fat area (Y) based on the measured abdominal width (X), weight (W), bioelectrical impedance (Z), and the equation.
