    • A dual mode rechargeable flashlight includes a generally rectangular housing sized to be readily carried and operated in one's hand and having a pair of upper and lower frame members that receive and retain generally planar rectangular panels preferably made of anodized aluminum and which may be of selective colors and have indicia imprinted thereon. An integral charging system within the flashlight housing enables recharging of DC batteries connectable in circuit with a high intensity lamp carried within a reflector assembly at a forward lens end of the flashlight. A modular self-storing blade assembly facilitates connection of the charging system to an electrical outlet. A power pack support housing within the flashlight is accessible through an access door to enable insertion of a 6-volt DC battery power pack connectable in circuit with a high intensity long life LED carried within the reflector assembly. Selective actuation of a switch button effects energizing of either the high intensity lamp or the high luminous intensity LED.

    • The flashlight of the present invention is comprised generally of a flashlight chassis which houses energy cells, a flashlight head which houses a beam adjustment assembly, and an endcap which houses a switch assembly. The beam adjustment assembly and the switch assembly utilize printed circuit boards to support the lamp bulb and switch, respectively. The beam adjustment assembly mounts inside the flashlight head and can only be accessed and adjusted by removing the outer lens retaining ring that secures the assembly within the head. Once accessed, the bulb support of the assembly can be rotated relative to the reflector of the assembly to adjust the light focal length of the flashlight. The adjustment assembly is also provided with a shock absorber that supports the light bulb. In one embodiment, the endcap is provided with a threads to permit the flashlight to be axially attached to an expandable baton. This embodiment also incorporates a side mounted switch to enhance manipulation and use of the combination flashlight/expandable baton device. In another embodiment, the endcap has an end-mounted switch to permit full extension of the flashlight. In each embodiment, a multi-function, low noise, push-button switch is utilized. The switch mounts on the printed circuit board, and is provided with primary and secondary circuits to guard against switch failure. The switch is protected by a cover integrally formed of an o-ring. Alternatively, the switch may be activated by a slidingly mounted push button, on which is flush-mounted a medallion for customizing the flashlight.

    • A battery recharger that can be used with a standard flashlight having a flared head and a generally cylindrical body includes a recharger unit that accepts flashlight batteries for recharging and a clamping structure that grasps the flashlight where the flashlight head joins the flashlight body and exerts enough clamping force to support the weight of the recharger unit when it contains the batteries. Substantially all of the flashlight body is free to be used as a carrying handle and also to be used as a lever arm to remove the flashlight from the grip of the clamping structure. The recharger includes recharging circuitry that can fully charge high-performance battery sticks up to their rated power of 4.4 amp-hours. The recharger accepts both two-cell and three-cell size battery sticks, and can be moved about to whatever locations are necessary.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for operating a flashlight using a light emitting diode as a primary light source. The method includes the steps of activating the light emitting diode as the primary light source of the flashlight under one of a plurality of different operating modes and selecting the operating mode using a momentary contact disposed on an outer surface of the flashlight. In the disclosed embodiments, the flashlight takes the form of a relatively small size, generally flat housing having metallic side panels that may be of various colors and have indicia printed on them. The housing has an integral keyring extension enabling an article to be attached to the flashlight or for the flashlight to be attached to other articles, such as the clothing of a user.
